Rough play fighting - do you stop it?

Hi everyone !

Looking for some advice on this subject. My male staff is agressive with one in every ten or so dogs he meets, and more so when he's on lead, which is all the time now as I don't want to risk anything. I am wondering why it is only certain dogs he shows aggression with. Him and my female staff cross love to play fight, I know they are only playing as they never hurt each other, but they do get quite rough with each other.

Should I stop them doing this? Would it help at all with Sammies occassional aggression?

Thanks

Are the dogs he is aggressive towards male or female? Or both? As you really need to ascertain this before anything else

If it's both then it's more likely to be fear, frustration etc, if it is just males then it's likely it's a male-male problem.

Regarding play - yes, practising rough play can cause a dog to be over boisterous in his initial or eventual overtures or games with other dogs and they can read this and immediately get concerned and react by telling him off, it's possible this can escalate - but it really does depend on the individual dog.

My first 2 dogs, male and female, used to play fairly rough (mainly chasing and grabbing than actual wrestling, though) and were excellent with other dogs -they were very well socialised as i used to walk with the breeder and her horde at one stage

Best way of playing is to ensure both dogs have a chance at chasing, etc - if only one dog is doing it all the time, it's not balanced play.

Thanks Wys.

I have tried to work out which sex it is, and would say it's prob all male. BUT, in saying this he has loads of male friends too. From what I can work out it appears to be shyer dogs, if a dog, male or female comes up and is very playful straight off he is happy as larry and off running around like crazy. If a dog doesn't bother but is not scared he is fine too. But this isna't always the way, I have only had hi9m a sinced Sept so still trying to work out what is behind the behaviour?!?!?

When they are play fighting, it is always equal, and would say the btich is the instigator most of time, but they chop and change all the time.
