From what i've read, the general consensus is that if you lot on here see somebody put their dog on a lead, you also put yours on a lead, or stop them approaching at the very least. Why does that dynamic then change when there is more than one dog? Does the same caution not apply?

The suggestion of leashing all 3 dogs then stops the social dogs interacting...I dont mind that TBH but there are times I allow them to interact.
Maybe i'm just being the dense one
now I am confused
thought you wanted the dogs to stay away from others?
you want the other two to socialise?

I think I said somewhere in this thread that if I frequented public parks then I would expect it but I deliberately walk places that are quiet and places that allow me to put space between us and any other dogs we see so thats why I get particularly annoyed when my efforts are in vain.

Generally yes, I dont really want my dogs interacting with others but with the collies, because they are social and dont overreact like Flynn, if a dog does come over I let them get on with it. They dont need to be kept away as such but I dont encourage interaction.

It's purely Flynn that I have the issue with because i'd rather he not get the chance to react in the way he does. I dont want him practising the behaviour of barking and chasing and growling.

I couldnt understand why, if only 1 dog out of 3 was on lead, why it suddenly changed the notion 'if I see a dog on lead my dog goes on lead'.

OK, I think understand!

You are in a "non dog" area?

I am trying hard, but I still have a picture of my boys meeting yours...leads on, ball out boys, DO NOT LOOK AT THE DOGGS OK. Done

And all dogs learnt ****** all how to interact

probably cos they think you want the other two to interact while you reward flynn for allowing it?

by putting them all on the lead and calling out they will be left in no uncertainty (sp?) that you do not want them mixing.

Mixed signals!

If I met you I'd think you'd got an issue with only one of your dogs and that the others are friendly enough for my dogs to say hello to.

I put one of mine on lead when I see other dogs because she's not good at greeting in a sensible way, I hope by leaving the others off that other dog walkers know they don't need to catch theirs.

It's quite annoying when they then catch their dogs because then I have to get all mine and when we're within talking distance I find they only did it because one of mine was on lead.

Have run into the two loose dogs and a dog on the lead thing from the other side. I didn't see the lead dog - too far away - and the two offleaders mugged us for a game so I let loose the terrierist & let them get on with it. The on-lead dog wasn't at all happy with the JRT as he passed on his fly by circuit but as the others had enticed him over, not IMO my fault. Called him away and off we went.

No idea if the other walker was miffed at me or not. Wouldn't have thought so.

I have on off-lead very sociable dog with good social signals and interaction with other dogs, and one on-lead partly blind only good with small dogs/dogs she knows.

What usually happens is people let their off-lead dogs meet and greet Parker and I can walk Cherry past. I don't expect people to call their dogs away from both dogs-it's just the ones that let their dogs charge up from the other side of the field that bug me and then they say "Well my dog is friendly" in a superior sort of voice!! Well my dog is not!! That's why she is on a lead-she gets very scared when dogs charge her as she got badly bitten before in a situation like this.

Parker is useful as he deflects the other dogs away from Cherry normally. He has also got a bit defensive of her since she has become partly blind. If another dog is running towards her he will body block and bump into its shoulder to move it away. Doesn't do this all the time-just with some dogs.

I always put Jake on the lead when i see an on lead dog, or an off lead dog where the owner seems to be keeping a distance. I think it is just manners, and being courteous.

There was an incident in the park the other day when i was walking with two other dog walkers and 3 dogs (not including Jake). Three people came in with two GSDs, both onlead. We left the dogs offlead until they started to get closer, then me and one of the other owners got the dogs on lead which left two dogs offlead. Now, I am pretty sure Jake would ignore them but just in case, i wanted to keep him safe incase they were kept onlead due to be DA. The two offlead dogs ignored them for a few minutes, but then one of the dogs charged over to see them. He reached the younger looking of the two dogs first, and the dog just went for him. Now, Zach is the kind of dog who doesnt often start trouble but if another dog does, he will be right in there. So a scrap started out, the GSD owner was fuming and started kicking out at Zach. It was over in seconds, and after some angry words the GSD owners moved on.

Then when me and the other owner who put her dog on lead, went to leave the park we saw the GSDs cut across the park to leave out the same gate as us and the younger looking GSD was now off lead. It then ran up to the on lead one, and that dog went for him and the owners had to pull them apart.

Now, in that instance the off lead dog IMO should never have been allowed to run up to an on lead dog. Yes, it does happen in places where lots of dogs are but it should be avoided as much as possible IMO. The dogs could have been put on lead, there was an opportunity but the owner just didn't want to... and even said the dogs would approach the GSDs. I like the guy, but i do think that it is the wrong attitude to have.
