I think there is something to this. Neither Kip nor Hoki are particularly interested in other dogs, but the only time I see Kip look like he's willing to play is when we meet JRTs. (though when he meets them, he doesn't like all of them!). As you say, it may be distant memories which trigger something - perhaps Kip thinks he is meeting a long lost friend (I wouldn't know as he is a rescue) & then gets a bit disappointed when he finds its not the dog he was thinking of!

Other dogs I know are more colour orientated - my brothers (black lurcher) loves all 'blond' dogs, but not any other colour!

Of all mine only Gremlin has preferences and dislikes of breeds.
She detests Alsatians and Staffies but adores all Westies. Even if a Westie is aggressive toward her she still loves him / her to bits.
She is also not keen on puppies, [ too bouncy, wriggly and playful for her liking ], but when a pup she disliked has grown up she is absolutely fine with them, [ unless an Alsatian or Staffie ]

Vegas gets on with pretty much any dog provided they're friendly to him,but will make a beeline for a particular Lab called Ewan who likes to play rough and tumble with him.

Vegas also gets very excited when a good friend of mine comes round.Takes about 10 minutes for him to calm down and stop shaking with excitement.

Skye likes bouncy dogs - labs, labradoodles, boxers, but he has also made friends with a Malamute and a Bichon Frisee. Collies always seem to attack him for some reason - I don't know if they think he is a sheep or if he is just too friendly for them.

i saw that Jack loves collies and shepherds and other parson russells. mostly, the important thing is that the dog is full of energy but gives him time to sniff and get to know with.

ours are fine with most if i had to pick i would say gsd and staffys but it is because they have had bad experiences with both breeds.
so if theres any dogs they are on guard with its them, but staying that if it is a dog they know they are fine, i guess they have to prove themselfs 1st to be given the ok in tobs eyes.
generally any thing that wants to play is fine with them size isn't really an issue.
but tob is more tolerant with smaller breeds.
hol dont care.

Max really likes Bichons, but as he's so large and bouncy, all their owners always take them away!

He also likes big dogs, the bigger the better. He has a friend, Bertie, who is a huge puppy Newfie, and also Guiness, a full grown GSD, and they always end up covered in slobber and mud!

He likes all dogs, even the ones that growl at him!

My Malamute bitch absolutely adores Boxers!

The boys are happy to socialise with most dogs, however my Aussie has a thing for Sibes (he see plenty at rallies and at training and they are slightly closer to his size than the Mals ).
