Identify this, please.

Another new shrub in the garden which has sprouted in the last few weeks - and I have no idea what it is. No visible buds, so I don't know if it flowers - but it definitely sprang from bare soil, so it dies back in winter.

Can anyone put a name to it?

Have you smelt the leaves? They look similar to my Lemon Verbena but I'm sure it's not that.

Sorry to go a bit off topic - my brother grew cannabis in his bedroom once and my mum used to water it - she thought it was a tomato plant (looks very similar) - my brother did not realise that you have to have a male and a female plant to produce anything so nothing ever developed !

It`s not cannabis. TBH it reminds me of Elder, but it`s bushy.

Well done, Claire - I think you have it

I googled "image elder" and firstly I got a load of old folk so I re-googled trying "golden elder" and it does look very similar.
The spiel said golden elder is a deciduous shrub - height and spread 6m - and will have flowers in summer followed by small black berries.
Sounds lovely, I hope it is that
