My Dog Casey (Renal failure )

Hi everyone,

I just wanted to know if anyone out there has had a dog recently diagnosed with severe renal failure. My dog Casey (bulldog/boston terrier) is 3 and she was taken to the vet last week to our knowledge only leaking a little bit of urine. When I left I was devistated. He diagnosed her with congential kidney failure. She was born with this. We had NO idea. We took her every 6months for check ups with the vet. I decided that the vet we were going to was too expensive so I changed. The vet immediately called in a specialist and he did an ultrasound of her kidney that was when the bomb shell hit. We were sent home with IV's 500ml per day, modified diet (that she stopped eating) and by today she was put to sleep. Im very devestated. All I could do today is cry. I loved that dog with all my heart. We bought her from Petland, with a contract that stated "No congetial defects" Now what do I do. I don't have my dog anymore, Im furious. I would have thought that prior to selling a dog you would test these things. I would appreciate any feedback. Thank you

Don't know of Petland but if its a pet shop I would imagine the Dogs come from puppy farms so could have all sorts of problems

So, so sorry to hear of your loss.

I lived in America and was so shocked to see puppies (and kittens) being sold in Pet Stores, even in huge shopping malls.
Over here it is hugely frowned upon. Any responsible person wanting a puppy would go to a reputable breeder, who would do health tests and know their pups well, also checking out prospective owners too.
We aren't whiter than white though, and there is a puppy farm problem, though they usually sell through adverts in newspapers etc, and are easier to spot as they often sell lots of breeds.

As for what you can do? I would guess if you have a contract, and your vet can prove that it was a congenital problem you should contact the store as a first step.

The sad thing is it won't bring her back. If you ever get another pup ask for advice on here about finding a good breeder, you'll get some great advice, though I'm sure thats not your priority right now.

Hi Pam , I am so sorry to hear you have lost your little dog Casey.

I am not sure how anyone selling a dog can state ' No congenital defects' and I would be wary of anyone making this statement because some congenital defects don't become evident until the dog matures.

Reputable breeders ensure the parents have been checked for defects that affect their particular breed before they are bred from and that puppies have been checked for defects appropriate to their age before they go to their new homes , but there are no absolute guarantees.

You say Casey was a bulldog/boston terrier X? I'm afraid it would not be possible to test every crossbred puppy for every conceivable defect, the cost would be prohibitive.
