Why do male puppies mount everything!!

My 10 week old golden is consistently mounting anything that moves or decides to sit in his domain.. The floor! is this normal behaviour in male dogs i've only had exprience with female dogs, My son thinks its hilarious and i'm trying to discourage it. What i want to know is......

Is it a sign of affection

or is a dominance thing

or is it just is a puppy trait

I presume he'll just grow out of it or will he need to be castrated(poor thing) and at what age do you have it done

What are the pro's and con's for this operation?

we don't intend to show or breed from him...

I have never had trouble with the boys mounting things, Skye on the other hand.

After we had Storm and Star castrated they then started to mount everything and anything for about a month afterwards.

I've never had a problem with male pups either. If they do mount I just distract them from doing it, it tends not to last long, I think they just get over excited at that age.

My boy kept mounting the cat when I got him home LOL. Just distract him with a toy or something and he should calm down within a few weeks.

Oscar has become 'intimate' with most if not all of his soft toys. Trouble is that afterwards, everything is on show for quite a wee while and he seems distressed about this. Distraction only works for a short time, and then he carries on anyway. Any ideas what else could be tried? He is nearly 6 months now.

Remove his toys and only let him have them under supervision. Maybe wash them first!

Odi went through that stage! It's not a dominance issue, it's just a giddy reaction!

Whenever he does it, just take hold of his collar to distract him...then ask him to sit...then give him a treat - then he doesn't associate the stopping humping with the treat, just the sitting.

Removed all his soft toys and bunged them in washing machine. Doesn't get them at all now, so behaviour has stopped. Long may it last!

Georgie humped a lot when he was 3-4mths old...especially my daughters rocking horse

He hasn't done it for a few weeks now....well only to his bed

I think it's a dominance thing, or maybe sheer practice!!!
