Robo-dog, the new guide dog

A Japanese collaboration has resulted in the creation of a robot-dog. The mechanical dog was developed by NSK with the University of Electro-communications, Tokyo, using technology from Microsoft Kinect.

The robot moves about on four wheels and uses 3D sensing cameras to measure the height and width of stairs, navigating its way up by using its front paws to pull itself onto the next step, with its 'handler' following behind holding an adjustable handle. The robot-dog can be controlled through touch-sensitive hand grips, working alongside pre-programmed software.

Promoted as having potential use as a guide dog, further work should result in the robot being equipped with GPS and voice command, resulting in faster responses.

They need to make it quieter, never mind anything else. What a bloody racket.

Cool though.

As cool as this is, it seems rather ott. Why make it a dog, it couldn't replace a guide dog. I think the GPS is a good idea though, but why not have it as a walker instead, and the user could lift it up the steps, and push it along. (It could have sensors built in to tell the user if they are abit to hit anything)
