Prevention is better than cure.

I have spent the past hour or so coming up with the best ways on avoiding dog theft and also the best way of getting your dog back if stolen.

Please take time to give this a read through and feel free to circulate it.

"sorry if this is in the wrong place"

Prevention

1. Tattoo or microchip your dog and ALWAYS keep your details upto date
Try to avoid tattooing ears as it has been known for the ear to be cut off!

2. Place a tag on your dogs collar stating he/she has been nuetured/spayed
Dont state your dog is ID chipped as theives may try to cut it out!

3. Never tie your dog up outside a shop! Even if your only "popping" in

4. Never leave your dog unattended in a car

5. Beware of strangers asking "too many" questions about your dog
Take a mental note of what they looked like and write it down when you get home

6. Always hold onto the collar when a stranger is stoking your dog. If a puppy pic it up!
Dogs leads have been unclipped in the past and the dog taken

7. Never let your dog out of your site when out walking - use a long training lead or lunge line if nessisary
Theives are opportunists.

8. Vary your walking routes and times
The less a theif knows about your routines the better

9. Keep your dog in view in your garden and dont leave them outside when your not home!

10. Secure fencing and gates are a must. Put an alarm on your gate and anti vandal paint/carpet grips on the tops of
Fencing.
Theives will try to break in and take your dog. The harder you make it, the less chance it will happen

11. Watch out for unusual activity outside or near your home
Take note of any strangers or vehicles - always write down number plates and vehicle descriptions

12. Keep all proof of ownership papers safe

13. Keep a record of your dogs breed, markings, age ect ect and take photos of each side of your dog and head.
This will help animal shelters, rescue, police, vets ect identify your dog quicker

Cure

1. Inform the relevent people straight away! Police, Dog warden/shelters and Vets
Provide them with a copy of your information pack (see prevention point 13)

2. Put lost posters up everywhere with the ID pictures taken of your dog
Good places would be: Vets, Schools, Town center, Shops, Popular "dog walking" spots and around the streets and
Estates

3. Advertise in your local fee adds and check them routinley!
Chances are your dog may have been stolen to sell on

4. Contact groups such as Doglost and post on as many forums as poss.

5. Insurance policy may help to cover the expense of finding your dog, so give them a call too!

I have no worries about having Dogs ears Tattooed or Stating that they have a Micro Chipped.

I think there has only ever been one reported case of someone trying to Cut the Chip out and the same person even coloured the Dog Different so went to great lengths to try and hide the Dog identity.

And most would not bother with cutting off ears who would buy a Dog with no Ears!! I think the few cases I have read about have always been Racing Greyhounds so the Dogs cant be traced to the owner that more than likely paid someone or did it thereself that's only how I feel about that tho. The rest is very good advice well done for taking the time to do it xx

Be aware that, far more likely than cutting off the ears, a thief will alter one or more numbers/letters on the tattoo so think about what the tattoo could have easily been changed to.

It's amazing how brazen some people are. One man actually tried to hold the lead while fussing Takara! When I told him to shove off, he said 'oh can you manage?'
Well I only walk her every day on the very same lead!
