You say that you feel trapped and cannot get out of the chair - just remember you can walk out any time you like - you are choosing to be there, but can walk anytime and can ask the dentist to stop what they are doing anytime or give you 5 minutes for a breather. It is your mouth, you are paying and you are in control - they cannot do anything to you that you do not want them to. Some dentists offer sedatives or hypnotherapy for nervous patients so that might also be an option for you. Just remeber - there are lots of people like you out here who dread the dentist, you are not alone......but you are in control, just keep telling yourself that.

Thanks Jacquie. I always tell myself I can get out of the chair at anytime but sometimes it just doesn't sink in
I have been offered sedative but I absolutely hate being giddy which can be a side effect so have opted out of that one. I keep saying that probably by the end of April all treatment will be over and I will have a sparkly smile

Oh well done Heather. Do you go on your own? When I go on the 7th to have seven out I was intending to go on my own (only 3 miles away) and dentist is quite close to car park but people keep saying I should have someone with me. I am not being sedated or anything so think everything will be fine. Good luck for you Thursday - are they top ones?

He was very nice and had me straight back the next day and put me to sleep and had to remove 6 teeth as they had all infected each other.
For 2 years afterwards I managed to go back for some fillings but had to be put to sleep for them too.
Now I have a lovely dentist who I was letting do fillings and work while I am awake and I always go for 6 monthly checkups. Unfortunatly my dentist has gone private but will still see me for checkups but then you have to have your treatment with this woman. She could not even numb me and started putting the old fear back in me. So a few times I have managed to see another young male dentist there who is wonderful, in fact so good he has even now been able to remove a tooth for me while I was awake.
So now I am ok if I know and trust the dentist, but terrified and physically shake if I don't.
After all the pain I have suffered with toothache though, I now have a bit of a phobia of toothache and if I get a twinge will be straight on the phone to the dentist as I am terrified of being in the agony I was before.

I think that is half the battle if you trust the Dentist. I have one years ago and he was horrible and very very impatient. The lady I am now seeing is lovely and very gentle. I physically shake as well when I am very nervous

Well done on having gone Sue, that's half the battle over now! I hope that all goes well when you have the teeth out. I would take someone with you to drive you if possible, one less thing for you to think about.

Be good when you go back When I was very young I used to go with my family to get used to being there. I would always be asked to sit in the seat and I was given a sticker. I would never open my mouth though. The first time I did open my mouth my dentist told me how good and brave I was. He put the little mirror in my mouth and I bit his finger really hard My mum was really embarrassed. I didn't get a sticker that day

Yes Sue I went on my own as I didn't want my family to see me being a big baby. That's just me though I prefer to be on my own. I was fine after and elated that I had had it done. Thursday I am having 6 top ones out and it will all be over then. It wasn't as bad as I thought it would be and once the injection started to work I couldn't feel a thing in fact I thought she was just losening the teeth ready to come out and she said it was all done.

Yes just focus on the end goal and take each step at a time and remember - you are in control, they cannot do anything to you unless you want them to. Let us all know how you get on x

Hope everything went well today Heather.

I spent about two hours in the bathroom before I left for dentist today and only had to have impressions. I must have lost half a stone

Look forward to hearing that you are ok and it wasn't too frightening

Like you I think I lost 2 stone before I left. It went brilliant even though she said that 3 were very difficult to get out as they were way up in the gum and broken, I did not feel a thing after the injections. I would not be afraid if I had to have it done all again, so no need for you to worry Sue. I have been in pain since the injections wore off but paracetamol soon sorts that. So please try not to worry too much. I was a bit miffed I didn't get a sticker though.

Oh well done - all over now. Have you got your new plate? Absolute disgrace that you didn't get a sticker
