Irritating!

So I adopted Nigredo on April 4th I believe. Didn't check the records, but that's correct I think. The shelter said he needed his parvo/bordatella/lepto/rabies boosters/shots 5 days after his initial vaccination date, which was the day I adopted him they said. They told us to schedule it for the 9th at the local vet.

So we took him in for his initial examination and the vet checked the records and said it's better not to vaccinate that close together and rescheduled for the 26th along with another exam (checking for growth etc.).

BUT, we've been advised not to take him anywhere by the shelter until he gets ALL THREE rounds. He gets his second on the 26th and his final boosters three weeks after that. SO, he's been at home since his adoption date and is apparently supposed to stay only at home and/or back and forth to the vets for over a month after adoption. HUH??

I was going to take him to puppy classes, but they said we can't attend those either right now because of the risk of exposure. It's not making any sense! How in the universe can I get him socialized and understand the outside world... if we can't leave the house for weeks?!?!

I'm not sure if I'm going to attend puppy classes, I'm still thinking about it... but I'd like him to meet a few dogs and children and whatnot... before over a month passes.

I want to obey the shelter, and I'd hate for him to get sick... but it seems rather ridiculous to me. I've never heard anything like it.

The shelter also said he was a Lab/BC cross and would reach a max of 70 lbs (approx 32 KG). But he's already 26 pounds (approx. 11 KG), born Dec. 19th (growing everyday) and his feet are huge and he has double dews on both back feet. Everyone who sees him and learns his age comments on how big he is for his age and I get "BIG FEET" comments at the vet and when people see his videos/photos online.

The vet didn't believe that he was only 3 months when I told them what breeds they said he was. But his teeth confirmed it. By the time he's 16 weeks (4 months) he'll most certainly be 30 lbs (approx 13 KG) at least and the vet said he's probably Lab/Great Pyrenees and will likely be 90+ pounds (40 KG or larger) judging by his growth rates etc.

Do you think the shelter was just being too cautious? What's going on? Do you think the shelter was right about his mix? Or closer than the vets? I'd like to have him DNA tested, but I have heard that they are very inaccurate. Is it worth doing? If so.. which test is best?

Should I obey the shelter and wait... or might it be okay to take him to the local park? There aren't many dogs there, and they are always leashed and with their owners. Mainly just lots of people there. He's very outgoing at the vets etc. and I think it would be great for him. I REALLY want to follow the shelters advice, but I'm not sure what to really do because it'll be over a month before I can take him out of the yard... Thanks for all input!

Personally all my puppies have gone out as soon as they have had their first injection, well a week after. Socialisation is crucial and the prime time for it is in the first 16 weeks. I used to carry them places when they were little so they could at least see and smell everything... Not always easy with fidgety big puppies, but worth it!

Have a read of this link

Sorry I put wrong link up

I also think puppy classes are vital, especially for Nigredo as he will be big and you mention that he has seen and heard jade barking at him when she saw him. Just little things like this can affect how puppies view other dogs and you've got to counteract this early with positive interactions with friendly puppies and calm older dogs. What are your reservations about classes?

Also, any puppy class worth their salt will make sure pups have had their initial vaccines and they will be mixing pups of a similar age and would encourage you to bring them to classes before they are fully vaccinated. that would show an understanding of the importance of early socislization. they woukd also only using positive methods.... It can only do him good!

Yes, all the classes require that puppies have their first set of vaccinations.. which he already has. I'm really going to consider the puppy classes. I've never gone to one of them, and frankly I don't want to end up wasting over $100 because I don't have money to waste.

His vet bills were getting high and I have to still pay for $100 shots and I also have cats to vaccinate very soon as well. Another few $100 dollars. I also have to get him his next dosages of HartGuard and stuff... which is even more money.

I'd like to enter the classes, but I've heard lots of people say they are a waste of money and frankly I don't have money to waste.. that is my main reason for being hesitant. I thank you a lot, though. I knew it was strange for me to have to keep him inside for all that time. I've had several puppies in my lifetime and never has anybody said that to me...

It is odd that the shelter recommend it, old fashioned but so many vets still recommend it too!
I understand what you mean about money, but maybe the other people thought classes were a waste of time because they didnt understand the socialization that was going on during them.

If you choose to go then choose wisely to make sure it's money well spent. You should be able to go and see a class yourself first, they shouldn't be over crowded, all the pups should be roughly the same age age and only positive gentle methods should be used.

Hi I know how frustrating this can be,but if something did happen, you would never forgive yourself. Does it really matter what he is,he is your dog and what he becomes via yourself is the most important, not what breed he is as long as he is healthy and you love him, just enjoy him.You can still continue training like recall etc. crystalgirl

Crystagirl did you read the link in my post? It's reall it necessary to keep pups isolated until they are fully vaccinated and its detrimental to their socialisation.

Our vet recommended not letting Betty go out where other dogs are likely to have been until one week after the second vacs. She was allowed out just not allowed to meet and greet and not allowed to touch the ground. We didn't find that a problem we just carried her on our daily walks, by the time she was allowed to walk she knew our route already. Gave her a chance to meet people and to see the world although a big place is OK buses and cars don't come after you and other dogs will just walk by etc.

We did the same with Mollie when she was a pup but I used a shopping trolley as she was too big for me to carry far.

Socialisation is really important but so is health, you need to find a way that you can keep them safe but also socialised.

To be honest, your yard has passing dogs in it anyway so he will be getting some exposure already I would have thought, at his age socializing him is more important, also the first vax is always repeated in case the mothers antibodies were still protecting him and then didnt work properly, but he is past that stage so the first vax would have been effective???
I think to get him out there n show him the sights, he is a big guy, not a teeny tiny defenceless pup
