"No winners in badger baiting" – dog suffers severe facial injuries

A dog has been discovered with severe facial injuries following police raids in Banbridge, County Down yesterday. The raids were part of nationwide intelligence-led 'Operation Meles' - aimed at preventing badger persecution. A man arrested at the time of the search is helping police with their inquiries.

David Wilson of the USPCA described the dog's injuries as “very, very grotesque, and obviously received as a result of badger baiting.” He explained that badger baiting, involving the badgers being attacked by dogs after being dragged from their setts, is quite widespread in Northern Ireland.

“There are no winners in badger baiting,” he said. “The dogs suffer every bit as much as the badgers. It ends up with possibly both, certainly one, dying.” He went on to say that the dogs involved do not receive veterinary treatment for their horrific injuries – which can include broken jaws being dragged off and teeth pulled out.

Mr Wilson expressed his delight at the success of the operation and confirmed that the injured dog was due to receive veterinary treatment today.
