I never watch, but having nothing better the other night, I watched him. He was using this collar, & every time the dog screamed, he said, it was because she wanted her own way.
I don't think so.....

I have to say the only thing I have ever seen him use is a slip lead. NOW before anyone yells differently - when with clients he uses whatever they use. Personally I think prong and pinch collars should be BANNED. Barbaric and cruel.

His methods are great for seriously FUBAR dogs who are to be treated as dogs and not pets.
Otherwise not for me in any way, shape or form.
The most worrying thing about his programmes is how many of them there have been, i.e. that there are that many dogs who need his help!

I have read this thread with interest even though I cannot watch the programme have had the same experience with my tibetan spaniel (and from what I hear it is a trait in the breed). I am taking on some of the advice, even though I have done a lot of it in the past and so far the only thing that still works (although I no longer use it, just show it to him) is my little bottle of water. I then get his whole attention and no more barking or aggression to his two sisters, or pulling. I know some of you did not think this method was very good and it did upset me a bit to think some of you might think I am being cruel to my dog but the way I looked at it was I was not having to pull him back possibly hurting him slightly, walk in another direction because there was a dog in sight, or him nipping at the girls or actually pulling me over. It has also stopped other dog walkers from turning and going the other way when they see my dogs and that is a big result as now I just make the three of them sit until the dog has passed.

I am now going to try a toy instead of carrying the water as they were all given a squeaky toy for Xmas from someone which they all love playing with them and if I have one of them in my pocket then possibly a quick squeak will do.

Would just like to say thanks to everybody who has given advice on this thread and hopefully I will have an even better behaved dog in a short time.

I recently used a remote spray collar and this basically stops him in his tracks and puts him off doing what he usually does..lunging growling barking etc. I only had to spray a few times (it doesn't hurt him) while at the same time saying leave and now he just walks past every dog. It is like a miracle. I think it was just a bad habit habit he had got into and he enjoyed doing it. Now I don't even have to put the collar on him. A simple 'Leave' command is all he needs. Maybe it would work on your dog.

Dog classes were no good for my dog either..it was just all too much for him.
I agree with you here the spray collars can be quite effective. Whether they are classed as positive training or otherwise i still think its worth a go, especially if you and your dog are getting this stressed over your walks.

you might find that filling an empty spray bottle with water and using that works too. by the sounds of it your dog isnt ready to start socialising properly so i would work on the distraction techniques first. once hes walking properly with you i would then try socialising him a bit more.

Ive never seen Cesar Millan use the same methods for every dog, so to me this shows he realises that not ALL dogs require a choke chain or a shock collar to be trained successfully.

In fact, during most episodes (7 out of 10) all he does is correct common household behaviour faults by using the appropriate body language and voice commands. Lets face it, there are a lot of people out there who think screaming and shouting at their dog and smacking their behind does the trick...

these 'ASBO' dogs he works with, the ones who bite, drag their owners under cars, go for other dogs and cause serious problems... well theyd probably be put down if someone didnt step in and sort it out. the methods may not be ideal, but surely in some cases they are necessary?

personally im not a supporter of equipment like the choke chain, or the shock collar, or anything else that involves pain... but I dont think this is what Cesar stands for.

You are wrong in your judgement of Cesar Milan. I have used his techniques with great results. If you claim to be so "educated" why aren't you doing a TV show to help people out. Apparently his techniques and ideals are valuable to the people he helps. Are you simply mad because his ideas and techniques are different from your views , so anything that is differeent from what you think is right must be wrong. Get a clue, you aren't perfect as you would like to think of yourself.
