Sniffer dogs for Clerkenwell nightclub after drug related deaths

CLERKENWELL nightclub Fabric has been allowed to keep open but must introduce a series of new tough new security measures.

They include implementation of sniffer dogs outside the venue, an ID scanning system to be put into operation for clubbers entering the building, and thorough searches on people.

The measures were suggested by the Metropolitan Police and agreed by Islington Council’s licensing committee.

The club will be the first in London to have sniffer dogs regularly on patrol, although Fabric will appeal against this condition.

Fabric was under threat of having its licence removed by the council after a series of drug-related deaths and near-deaths at the venue, two of which had occurred in the past three months.

A spokesman for the club said: “Our chief and only consideration has – and always will be – for the safety, well-being and best interests of the people that come to this venue.

“None of the measures listed in the outcome of the review will come into effect until after we have seen the council’s written report and we have decided how we intend to appeal certain points.

If sniffer dogs will save drug-related deaths, I do not understand why the club wants to appeal.
