Guide dogs savaged in Birmingham street attacks

Two working guide dogs have been viciously attacked by out-of-control dogs in Birmingham.

In the first shocking incident, a five-year-old German Shepherd called Carla was with her owner Ricky Brennan when she was bitten by a Staffie cross dog outside shops in Station Road, Erdington.

Carla suffered puncture wounds to her leg in the attack, which took place between 11am and noon on November 10.

In a separate attack, Donald Morrison’s nine-year old Labrador Barney suffered a ripped ear when he was set upon by a dog of an unknown breed in Edgbaston Park at around 8.15pm on November 21.

Both pets recovered from their ordeals, which were reported to the police.

Mr Brennan, 32, from Erdington, said: “I am absolutely distraught.

“I was out on my own and the dog just charged at Carla for no reason.

“The person with the dog said they were sorry but didn’t seem upset they just said they need to get rid of the dog. It is lucky that Carla wasn’t more seriously injured and has been able to carry on working although she was nervous when she first went back out.

“I can’t get out without her I would have been stuck inside until she recovered.”

Police have released CCTV of the attack on Carla and are appealing for help to track down the dogs in the two incidents.

Sue Bushell, Community Engagement Officer from Guide Dogs Birmingham Mobility Team, said: “These were shocking attacks which have left two guide dogs requiring veterinary treatment and their owners traumatised.

“Ryan and Donald, like many blind or partially-sighted people, rely on their guide dogs to get out and about.

“An attack on a guide dog can rob someone with sight loss of their independence and freedom, leaving them virtually housebound.”

Around 10 guide dogs are attacked across the United Kingdom on average every month.

What sort of person lets their dog attack a guide dog and then just says they "need to get rid of the dog"?

Its bad enough when anyone lets their dog attack another dog this sort of thing is totally despicable and should carry a very heavy prison sentence in my opinion if the low life's are caught.
