I've voted for yes to allow any dogs to enter.
It's supposed to be a fun show. And whose to say that pet dogs are any worse/better than show dogs. Think about it the majority of a litter go into typical pet homes and are not shown. Out of all of the dogs that are shown (and not all are good quality) there are at least the same again out there in pet homes of as good or better standard.
These shows are supposed to be fun. It's people who are supposed to have ONE thing in common. They love dogs. I love meeting new people with their different dogs. You have a laugh, you might take home a rossette. But it's a good day out for very little money.

This is a multiple choice poll by the way :smt001
Our shows over here are different from your, but then here in tassie we are different again from the mainland shows when i first came here from N.S.W and I was use to entring sweepstakes classes as well as championship classes it was a little bit of a shock to find that they didn't have sweeps here in tassie, we have only open or championship shows so every show dog entrieds whether they be the top winning dog or even a newbie as we don't have as many shows to choose from like the mainlanders do over there they could have as many 20+ shows to choose from and over 1 weekend even have their dog's Australian Championship title and the maxium points per show is 25 and you need 100 points to claim a champ, we on the other hand only have 1 a weekend or sometimes two

This is a topic I've heard many times at various companioin shows, always at a heated level too.

I can see both sides to the story, I can see it being of benefit to proper show'ers so their dogs gain experience in the ring, plus for practice, but I can also see the negative side for those that don't show. It is frustrating to go to some of these shows, and see the same dogs (that are doing well in champ and breed shows) come away with the prizes. However I don't necessarily feel that they shouldn't enter!

I voted yes as they are not breaking any rules and it is more money for the charity holding the show.

In Ireland, the situation is a little different. Even at Opens, Champions cannot enter except in Champion Stakes so we get a lot of local dogs entering and having a good time, alongside the youngsters after their JD points. The equivalent of the companion dog show is the agricultural show and it is rare to see any faces from the show ring there, in fact if it is not a IKC registered event, as members of the IKC (Irish Kennel Club) we are not allowed to enter. (Unlike the UK KC, you become a member when you register a dog so more rules to comply with.)
When I went to CD shows when I lived in the UK, there were some who went who I also saw at Opens and Champ shows. There was always a bit of chuntering but in the main, people got on with it. Whatever show you attend, once you duck under the ropes you put yourself up to the risk of failure and have to accept this regardless of who is in the ring.
That's showing, folks!
I was very suprised to see that you said members of the IKC were not allowed to enter agricultural shows?

I know lots of people that enter both

Not bovvered (i.e. I copped out ) because the only shows I get to are the local island agricultural shows, where bits of paper with pedigrees don't matter a whit The only bit you ought to have is a vacc certificate, although nobody ever asks

At his second attempt, my Kali came second in "Working Collies", much to the chagrin of one local farmer. So much so that next year, he got the committee to change the rules so that pet collies had to be entered as "Any other breed". Hell, I'm all in favour of a bit of friendly competition, but changing the rules to exclude the better-looking dogs, just because you can't be bothered tidying yours up is a bit much (I've seen the famer's wife beside the ring, cutting binder twine out of the dog's coat just before the start!).

Regardless of the Show, you always take the best dog home, and I've come to regard that particular bit of cheating as a clear sign that Kali was a competitor to be feared!

Sorry, don't know why the pic isn't showing (it will, if you click on its link) ,but it shows Kali just after his moment of truth, looking totally chuffed.

Eventually, he won a rosette so often that he thought it was all part of the procedure. However, in his tenth year, he failed at County level, and it was obvious that he thought he'd done something wrong - he just slunk along on the end of his lead, looking unhappy. So I bought him a burger. Probably tasted better than the ribbon.............

Hi Everyone,

I personally think that it doesn't matter who is entered as long as they are having fun. I show at specialty shows also BUT I don't do it for any prizes etc. To me its just a way of getting out and having fun with my dogs and meeting people and its also a good way to socialise puppies.

The last few times I have taken my kids with and they are also having a good time meeting other kids that are also there with their families for the same reason... to have fun with their dogs.

Why would they want to bother though?

I can understand for experince for youngsters?

I always think Show handlers look abit Silly trying to win everything at a fun level. For the same reason i dont put my Obedience dog in fun/companion level obedience. I did enter Mav in April in one as his very very first show, but wouldnt want to now hes competing properally

Possibly for the same reason that people enter the Virtual Dog Class on here, because it is good fun and the opportunity is there and also at real life companion shows they are raising money for charity.

I am sure people are just so proud of their own dogs whether they show at Open or Championship level or at both these and fun shows and in thee virtual classes on here . It is human nature to want to let people see your dogs because you are so proud of them and as Snorri says win or lose you still bring home what to you is the best dog and you have a fun day out.
