I note with interest that at least ONE person who agreed with Mr Burns has now been converted to the raw diet via another vet, Nick Thompson.

As for the carbohdrate issue I will quote Marge Chandler DVM, MS, MACVSc, DACVN, DACVIM, DECVIM-CA, MRCVS who lectures at the Royal Dick Veterinary College and is one of only TWO veterinary qualified nutritionists in the UK:

There is no absolute requirement for carbohydrates in adult dogs. They do help maintain glycogen stores and are used early in exercise period for sprinting. The minimum requirement for exercising dogs is to use CHO for at least 20% of kcal, the amount depends on the type of exercise. Other than racing greyhounds “glycogen loading” is probably not beneficial in dogs.

Other supporters of the raw diet include vets such as Richard Allport, Christopher Day and Mark Elliott.

None of whom interestingly produce their own pet food and thus have no vested interest!

If I wanted advice on feeding raw, the last person I would ask would be a processed food manufacturer.

Smokeybear,
It seems you assume I'm opposed to raw feeding, which is not the case. I simply pointed out that both BARF and prey model feeding incorporate mistakes that cause problems in dogs, and that Mr. Burns did not highlight these (and in fact perpetuates some of them) in his critique. I'm a very long term (17 years) raw feeder myself. I'm not impressed with veterinary endorsements of any particular feeding style, since vets generally are not reliable sources for this type of information. If you're interested, I wrote an article about the various mistakes that are made in both BARF and prey model camps, which will be published in the September issue of Dogs Naturally Magazine.

I assume nothing and I am in no "camp", I have studied raw for over a decade myself, and canine nutrition as well as human nutrition and fed raw for only 10.

I posted not in response to any particular post but the first by John Burns.

You cannot prevent people making mistakes regarding feeding no matter how well informed they are (look at our obesity culture), you can only provide information based on the data available for people to reference.

Whilst it is true that in GENERAL most vets are not the greatest source of dietary advice those who have SPECIALISED in nutrition and have the appropriate knowledge should, IMHO, be listened to, just as anyone else in any profession who has the APPROPRIATE skiils, knowledge, ability, training and experience.

Dogs do not care WHAT label PEOPLE put on their nutritional outlook, they just care about eating.

I feed raw end of. It aint BARF it aint PREY MODEL, it aint called anything but a species appropriate diet which provides the nutrients that a) canines and b) my individual canines require.

I see however YOU also have something to sell...........

SB,
What I'm "selling" is information and guidance for dog owners wanting to feed their dogs optimally to prevent and reverse disease, and everything that I teach lines up with the objective truth, as it is presently known, about the needs of dogs. I haven't made up a philosophy that is designed to support the use of a product, as Mr. Burns apparently has.

As I have said before, some people misuse blogs to plug stuff or otherwise get round Forum rules.
If you`re that desperate for publicity, take out an advert, like anyone else.

i have a petshop that sells raw food, everyone that has tried it has never returned to dry or tinned, not because of its benefits just because they say there dogs and cats love it. most serve table scraps to there animals and get them treats, some of them say that there dog is in better condition because of it. i also sell dry and yes burns as well and these people are happy with it. but i must say the raw feeders say there dog is happy whereas the dry feeders say that is best for them as it is not as messy
