We have a sort of mini-inglenook it's quite wide but only half height. Currently the old boiler is still installed inside it, with a big flue going up (so I guess the chimney is still usable).

Sounds great Azz, esp the half height bit. If the fireplace is low, then if you had an open grate - a fire basket - this would be much cheaper for you, and you wouldn't need a copper or brass hood installed to make the fire "draw". Obviously with an open grate you don't need to saw the logs so short, which if you are wanting to collect from the woods, is worth bearing in mind.

Depending on your choice of stove, you don't necessarily need a high fireplace.

Stop looking for excuses Azz and just get on with it!!
