Bread making machine

As it's my "ahem " 30'th ( liar liar pants on fire ) birthday next month I was thinking about getting a bread machine. I do make my own by hand and wondered if a machine was worth it or if the bread was as good as proper hand made ?.

We've got one, although I think it is a pretty naff one (got it off a family friend, so paid nothing). It takes about two hours to make the bread which seems like forever. BUT...the results are pretty good I think. I've never homemade bread before though so I have nothing to compare it to...

I love my bread machine! I can also make by hand, but this is nice and easy.

I often put it on overnight, or when I'm at work, and set the timer - this means I have bread ready when I wake up, or when I walk in the door.

The longest programme on mine takes about 5hrs (its a Panasonic SD255), but you can set it, and just ignore it until it beeps!

I made a pesto and pinenut loaf the other day in it - it was divine!

Oh yes, you get a lovely crust..mine has settings for how 'dark' you want it - I just stick it on the middle one!

I had a second hand one years ago off a friend just to see if I liked it. I eventually started using it over here and my hubby loved the bread. There were loads of recipes and I loved it. I then bought a 'better' one from Carrefour which turned out to be c...p with hardly any nice recipes even online. I now make my own usually. I tend to just use ordinary flour which you can buy here v. cheaply otherwise tbh think it's quite expensive buying the proper bread flour and the rate my husband eats it is nobody's business!

I've been trying to get some Which ? reviews, seems i'll have to sign up to see any of them.
Surprisingly Good Housekeeping haven't reviewed any
The Panasonic one mentioned doesn't seem to be made any more, but it's replacement model is getting mixed reviews, some love it but others have said the paddle has broken off after just a few months.

Love my breadmaker, but due to the healthy eating regime I'm *trying* to follow, it's been consigned to the cupboard, along with the sandwich toaster and the waffle maker...
