Rottie chews anything wooden - how to prevent this?

I thought i pick the minds of you more experienced dog owners out there....Nero my Rottie loves any thing wood... the floor, fence or skirting boards. so imagine my horror when i come down some mornings and he legs it out of his dog flap and i find yet more canine carpentry.

He Is left alone in the house for about 4 hours a day, he has the run of the house and the garden. I give him calcium bones, hide chews, he has toys ranging from kongs to footballs... but i cant stop him from chewing the wood.

Any help at all wood (get it) be greatfull

Have you tried Bitter Apple? 99% of dogs HATE the taste of it, Ive used it for years (had a lot of foster dogs through my house and Ive used it in training), its never caused any problems with the dogs nor with discolouration of furniture, carpeting etc.

Heres some info on it.
http://www.1800petmeds.com/pdetail.a...ydN1NUbrGmImgQ

it is available in UK.

You would have to respray the areas that your dog is chewing on every so often but sometimes dogs will start a behaviour which then becomes more of a habit so you have to then break the habit. Or he could just like the feel of the texture. How old is he? Is there any chance he is still teething?

Hi Jason,
Ive got 3 rotties & they all went through this stage. Well the pup still does to an extent

The best thing i found was in Wilkinsons called pet behave training spray. I only used it a few times & now they only chew what they are allowed It does smell pretty disgusting though.

My old Rottie had a thing with chewing anything wooden like door archatraves, skirting, tables.I did try many brands of anti-chew spray stuff and none of it worked-infact he activly licked one sort!

He did grow out of it though and was less than 2 yrs old so Nero may stop soon.
