Dog Tags - What do you put on your dogs' tags?

Having just read Gillbo64's post about a current dog knapping scam, it got me thinking about dog tags and what information should be on them.

Both my dogs have 3 tags; one for the Microchip, one from PetPlan and one from the Missing Pets Bureau, Petback MedAlert, with whom they are registered for life with.

With the Missing Pets Bureau Petback MedAlert tag, they advise you not to have personal details on tags as they do the work on helping finding a missing pet. At the time of registering I had to take DNA mouth swabs from both dogs and send them to the MPB for registration. Apparently, DNA is the only thing to stand up in court as proof, should need be.

When I did the first KC Good Citizen Scheme test, I explained the tags as part of the test in making sure the dogs have tags, she said that what I had was perfectly fine.

However, I'm tempted to have a phone phone number on their tags, but I'm not sure if that's the right things to do. I certainly wouldn't put names or addresses on the tags, though. They are off lead when out 90-95% of the time, so dog knapping does worry me.

Just a few weeks ago while out walking at the local dams which is beside a quiet road with houses along it, Roxy decided to go and visit a gas man who was sitting in his van at the time looking at paperwork. Luckily the man loved Roxy and wasn't a threat to my dogs, but I know that it was highly irresponsible of me and completely my fault it happened in the first place as I should've stopped her on time. It could well have been anyone in that van and they could have made off with Roxy. She's the worlds best mate and loves everyone, so wouldn't have put up a fight!

What do you guys think? Is what I've got enough? Thanks.

I thought owners name and address were a legal requirement?

I have my mobile number and address on tags

I don't actually know what information should legally be on a dog tag, but I would imagine the law doesn't take in to account other information on other tags the dog may have.

I'm certainly not putting names or addresses or the tag, but I am considering a mobile number/vets number.

Thanks for the info, Steph, much appreciated. Good to know what other information people have on their dogs tags.

address on one side, mobile no. on the other. I want my dog back! Mind you, getting split rings that don`t rust and disintegrate after a daily immersion in the sea would be good.
eta - they`ve got the `scan me` tag as well.

One side = Surname/first line of address/poscode/Phone number

Other side = Vets/Vets phone number/Vets fees will be paid.

Never put dogs name on there - don;t want to make it easy for people.

Oh the 'Vets fees will be paid' is quite interesting. I had honestly never thought of putting that on a tag. You've got me thinking now, may just consider that along with vets details on the tag. Thanks!

http://www.pettags.co.uk/index.php?a...d&productId=21

Hope this is allowed - these are the ones I have for my dogs and I would highly reccomend them. The ones on my dogs take a lot of punishment and nearly 2 years on they are still on the same slit ring and still easily readable.

Oops - doesn;t work - anyway they are the brass tags.
