Sent for a schedule

For Gloucester & district open,
It came today, had plans to show both Tyler & Meg,but I'm not bothering entering either of them.
3 classes,Junior,Graduate & open,all mixed classes

I thought that the open would have been seperate not mixed. This is becoming more common I think, but it puts me off because everybody knows a good dog will beat a good bitch.

I've never known an Open show to have separate sex classes !! I do know some classes give BOS ribbons if someone has sponsored them, but other than that, unless it's a breed which is very, very popular, I didn't think Open shows, had seperate sex classes !

I've also seen a few bitches beat dogs for BOB even in very popular classes like Labs, when I've seen over 20 shown.

Staffords have nearly always had two seperate classes for open.We usually have 5 classes for our breed, puppy,Junior,Graduate,Open Dog,Open Bitch, but for this one it's been cut down to 3.
I've seen some bitches beat dogs, but not vey often.

Well you are lucky, nearly every other breed has joint. In 20 odd years of showing I never ever realised that some breeds had seperate breed classes at open shows. Even Goldies and Lab's are usually all together and CKCS and they have massive entries.

Ehhh you learn something new every day.

Some of us don't even have classes!!

Absolutely...........In many Open shows we have to enter AV Working as we don't have classes !!

Even 2 very large open shows I attend have huge Lab classes of 20-30 entries, and still no separate sex classes.

Sal you should still enter as it's good experience for the dogs.I have only had Asta in one show where she was up against only bitches, she got a 3rd in her first class, then won the second one.Since then she has been in shows all mixed and can stand her own up against the dogs as much as the bitches. She has been placed second and third, not bad for her first year. You go for it gal,I'll be cheering you on from away up here, xxxxxxxxx

I'm sure you would enjoy your day if you went to the show. Like people have said, it's extremely unusual for a breed to have separate classes for male's and females at an open show.

Go on, put the entry in you've got to be in it to win it.

Hi there,

WE have been showing for over 11 years and at Open shows, all our classes are always mixed unless there is some special sponsorship. The number of classes offered depends on which list the judge is on. In our breed a C list judge can judge 3 classes and a B list judge can do 5 classes.

So please go and support your judge as he/she cannot progress up the judging ladder unless he 'goes over' a certain number of dogs.

You also need to support your show and your breed as if they dont get enough entries, the Kennel Club will require them to withdraw that breed from the next show and then you wont have any choice at all.

Open shows are a wonderful place to practice showing and socialising your dogs and you have the opportunity to qualify for a Show Certificate of Merit.

Enjoy your show,

Thalice Malice
