Staffy owner letting the breed down!

We went to Elmdon today, and it was a lovely walk (albeit very very wet ) and near the end of the walk, we were standing round having a gab and throwing the toys and had a little bit of training going on.

Anyway, up the hill there appeared a lady with two dogs (a staffy and another staff cross I think, but this one was on lead, so didn't really notice). Jess went up to say hello to the staff that was off lead. No barking, no tail held high, no dominance etc. All of a sudden (pretty much as soon as Jess got up to it) it started attacking Jess, and kept going. The owner was just shouting her dog (albeit in a stern voice) to stop, but didn't do anything to help.

The owner (after I saw the staff off) just put the dog on lead and went on her merry way. No checking to see if Jess was ok. No apologies. These sort of dog owners pee me off

Sorry for the negativity, but some dog owners

I hope Jess ok.

I know what you mean about some owners. When my dog was attacked by a Boxer, the owner turned around to see what was happening and continued walking in the opposite direction.

Is Jess okay?
I always place my dog back on the lead when i see a person or person and a dog, though she is fine with people. Other dogs its 50/50.
Part of being a responsible owner is protecting your dog and other dogs from yours.
have had a similar thing happen with a spaniel and my late dog.
The man was going 'he's alright, he wont bite your dog' while my mum was asking him to put it on a lead, like our dogs were, and sure as, the spaniel bit maddy.

I know exactly how you feel. Today when my owner was walking off i ran up to her to make sure i knew where she lived. Its really unaccetable how people dont control their dogs. If your in training with your dog and it runs up to people then so be it, its only going to learn one way or another. But if your dog is aggressive, then you should be responsible and care about what the dog does. Not to just walk off

Hope Jess is ok Same thing happened to Zena yesterday, but I managed to get her off the narrow path out of it's way and dived into the undergrowth with her to protect her, she was TERRIFIED of it and it would have gone in for the kill!!!! I told you before, I give these dogs a wide berth with my puppy, wish I had done that yesterday, but the path was too narrow, the staffie was offlead, and I'd already ASKED the bl**dy owner if we were ok to come past!!!! Grrrrr! I still blame the owners though Glad your Jess is ok I hope anyways and enjoyed the rest of her walk meeting nicer doglets!

Sorry you ahd a bad day, and a poor experience.
I Feel like someone apologising for my breed when really I should be out shooting the bloody owners..........hope Jess is okay.

I am starting to feel like I should walk with someone in front of me ringing a bell saying "Stafford and owner coming..."

The thing is and I am not defending the actions today on either thread this one or the sad tragic death of the pup that, but Staffords and all bull breed dogs are strng and can do damage when they get hold its RESPONSIBLE owners that are needed.

Seems to me like Staffies are great people dogs, but can be a bit suspect with other dogs.

I meet a fair few staffs when out walking (infact most dogs seem to be bull breeds around here) and some are OK and others get put on the lead straight away and are obviously looking for a fight as you walk past....... strange one, my guess is it all in the breeding and how well the dog is socialised as a puppy.

My dog (GSD X breed), will run up to other dogs given half a chance, she is still only 11months (but very big!) and just wants to say hello & play..... so I always put her on the lead as soon as I see another dog, because I know a lot of other dogs will react with aggression if a strange dog comes charging up to them at full speed.

The situation you describe sounds a bit 50/50 though, as both were off lead and no one can really predict what will happen in that situation......... sounds like the other owners attitude was less than desirable though.

Jess is fine, but I don't blame the staff, I blame the owner.

I only let her run up as the other dog was offlead (I always either hold her collar or put her on her lead if the other dog is on lead).

99.9% of the staffs that I meet are adorable dogs, fantastic breed.

That's why I put the title against the owner and not the breed

Jess is fine though even though she seems to be targetted a fair bit at the mo, but hey, she's ok

I'm glad Jess is fine. *hugs*

I'm sick to the back teeth of idiot owners though, and I've met quite a few, sadly
Eventually we'll all be tarred with the same brush and have restrictions galore placed upon us
