Do you take your dog(s) on holiday with you?

Ive always been loathe to go away on holiday and leave my two dogs so usually OH stays at home and I join my sister and BIL for a few days at a holiday park .

Last year OH and I decided to book a lodge in the Wye valley /F orest of Dean and took the dogs. They behaved much better than expected so we went away again this year to Lymington near the New Forest .

Its great having the dogs but you have to be prepared to walk your dogs late at night and early morning so they can toilet.
Libby chi is a lady and not happy to wee on a lead but got used to it .

What do you do with your dogs if you go away?

My Border Collie Tyto has been with me on every holiday since I got him 12 years ago. He has been everywhere and on everything except a plane. Caledonian Sleeper to Scotland. Large cruisers on Loch Ness. Ferry to Isle of Wight and then Dorset, Hampshire and Kent. All have been holiday cottages and he has been welcomed in all the pubs you can imagine, cafes and shops. Also cart rides pulled by Shire Horses. Takes forever to go shopping as all the children and adults want to stroke him. I suppose that is because he is a red and white collie. Not many around. Hope you enjoy your holidays with your dogs. I have found mine a joy to go travelling with. My other dogs also went on holiday with me to various places. Including caravanning with three collies and one german shepherd.

I simply cannot understand how any dog owner could leave their dog to go away on holiday ... the options now for taking dogs to pubs, hotels, self-catering cottages, even restaurants are so multifarious it is strange in my opinion to consider leaving them behind.

Currently on a caravan holiday in Devon with my dog Timbah. Lots of dog friendly places and certain beaches, where dogs are allowed

Apart from shopping, the dogs go wherever we go. The only problem is, (or can be), dining out if the weather is hot. No matter how many ventilators and silver sheets you use, it is no fun if you are running back to the car every ten minutes. May as well settle for fish and chips in a lay-by!
Our best holidays were when we had a narrowboat. We had a high double bed, and the dogs had a large deLuxe water-cooled kennel below.

I've previously left my dogs in a very good kennels when we went abroad. Then we bought a static caravan and the dogs went with us every weekend and holiday.

Now I live at the coast and Rosie goes absolutely everywhere with us. She sits on my knee when we have breakfast outside the very busy cafe in the center of town or sits under the table at the quiet cafe we go to at weekends.

When shopping, one of us sits in the car with her if at the supermarket, or one waits outside if a town shop. The couple of shops that allow dogs, she goes in with us.

We don't drink so rarely do pubs, but most of them are dog friendly

No darling, cos you're not ... you are Trouble, not Strange! Poorly worded post ... I meant UK, although it is perfectly possible now to take dogs to the continent - a lot of hassle, but possible. We were planning to take Ben to Portugal in Betty, our caravan. Apols if I have offended you!!

All pubs in holiday areas virtually are dog-friendly. In Somerset, a hotel allowed us to take Ben into a restaurant. The Victoria Inn at Holkham allows dogs in the dining room, so does the Gunton Arms in Norfolk. We have found that Norfolk, Somerset and Devon to be extremely dog-friendly, allowing dogs into restaurants. We have yet to put Wales to the test but I bet they are no different.

Even if you are tee total, you can of course go to pubs and restaurants ... dogs LOVE pubs ... best training ground in the world for a dog is a pub - Hal was taken to our local at 6 weeks, before he had had his injections, and sat on the beer barrel that acted as a table at the bar. Everyone patted him and the socialisation benefits of this interaction with loads of people was invaluable. Ben would start howling every time we got near to our local, and we only had to say to him Pub!! and he would leap up howling with excitement, bless him!
