I'd recommend looking into a local puppy class that you and your son too can get involved with - learn the ropes and the basics. See if you can go to socialisation groups or puppy parties....Its really important to have both a well mannered and well socialised dog and to work on it from a young age.
Start off on a good complete puppy food - the likes of Arden Grange, Orijen, Fish4Dogs, Barking Heads, etc are all good - none of the Bakers/Pedigree rubbish thats out there!Enjoy your new "child"!
