Early socialisation for pups

I have a 9wk old pup. He is having his first jab on tuesday, so its going to be approx 3wks before he will be allowed out ( when he's 12wks old )

I understand the importance of early socialisation, and know that socialisation should be done before 12wks.

The thing is, if my pup is not allowed out until he's 12wks, how am i going to get him well socialised by the crutial age he should be???? He has met plenty of people, i have invited many visitors over so he gets to know different faces etc but he really does need to be socialised with other dogs i think.

Am i worrying too much, or will he be fine going out into the big wide world at 12wks?????

Hi Teenytiny I have just replied in my other post but will move the reply here...

Teenytiny you can and should be taking your puppy out, not allowing him down on the floor or where he will come into contact with other dogs but in your arms...

I take puppies out in the car, through fields next to me where there are cows/sheep/horses,sit them on my knee on benches to observe traffic other dogs and people passing by (many of whom will speak to your puppy).

When I was in the hairdressers a while back someone bought in a Norfolk Terrier puppy and it had a great time 'speaking' to everyone amid the noise and bustle (I nearly stole it ), great socialising ..

Just carry him out places with you so he experiences lots of different noises/sights. The time will fly & he'll soon be out there meeting plenty of other dogs, don't worry

Hi - just carry him to as many places as possible. We took ours to the supermarket car park, Pets at Home, to see sheep and cows, to the vet, visiting relatives and to the park. Pets at Home is good as he will see birds and rabbits as well as people. It was good fun - I wish we could still carry him sometimes. Enjoy it.

Oh how I remember asking this same question!

We did as everyone else has said but I wasn't able to carry him too many places as he was too heavy!

I parked in the supermarket car park, near to the entrance and sat with the dog with the boot lid open (we have an estate car). Same thing near to the kids school. Various people/kids wander past and some come over to say Hi.

I'd also pop him on his lead and stand at the garden gate to watch passing traffic.

A good place to park up also is the doctors surgery, gets puppy used to pushchairs/old people with walking sticks/hats/dark glasses etc.

Ask at your vets about puppy parties, fantastic for wearing the little man out with puppies of his own age.

Don't forget what you can do indoors as well. We took ours to other peoples houses, where she got lots of treats and friendly attention, so quickly learned to love going on visits. We also spent lots of time working on household events, like the floor being hoovered, the blender running, smoke alarms going off, lawn being mowed (obviously we kept her inside for that one ) It's all about exposing them to everything you can think of while they're young enough to be curious. Now's the time to get him used to grooming and physical inspection (gently running your hands over his body, lifting each paw in turn in a cupped hand, looking in his ears and under his tail). Sounds like you've been doing your homework though, so keep up the good work and you'll have a dog to be proud of
