You have been given good advice here from experts.
I'm no expert but I would add one thing. You need to be prepared to take on the not insignificant commitment. On my many walks I get the impression that many dog owners don't quite get that. But the rewards you get back...........

Thanks Trouble/Besoeker - I'll start by getting a book and trying to understand what's involved in training well. Will then only consider getting a dog if fully confident we'll be able to provide sufficient/effective training.

and remember, to teach your kids acceptable behaviour, you guided them, showed them what was acceptable and what is not and hopefully in a very calm and kind way. Pups are no different, but be aware, just like kids, give 'em an inch and they'll take a mile so set your rules and guide pup to stick with 'em. For instance, if a pup is asked to move from a doorway everytime you pass, then eventually they will see you coming and move
