I think the gene for DM has only recently been discovered.

It is rife in some breeds and types of dogs than others.
You are right it has only recently been discovered in fact I think it wasn't long aftwer we lost Ollie it came about. The Bernese breed club are now tryng to make it a rule all potential breeding stock is tested like they have to for Hips and elbows.

Just a quick update - I'm pretty sure now that Loki's ataxia is down to the increase in phenobarbital. He's already improved so much since our visit to the vets. Phew!

Thank goodness there is some improvement already. He has done so well to get to 8 years of age, and hope he has many more birthdays to come

Linda that's great news it did seem a bit of a coincidence that the two things increase in meds /ataxia came at the same time.
