Creating synthetic life

So what are your thoughts on this.

I think that it has massive potential esp in the area of disease prevention. But I'm also aware of the danger it could pose in the wrong hands. A fact that those involved in the early stages of this are all to aware of.

In a documentary shown on discovery earlier this year, one of the scientists was talking about writing suicide genes into the dna sequence, which would mean that if the organism wandered from its assigned environment, it would die instantly.

Frightens the socks off me - I suppose its OK if they confine it to bacteria - but I don't imagine for one moment it will stop there. As the interview said this is a commercial venture - so big money is involved and where there is money corruption and other unsavoury elements are often also present.
