It sounds to me like he has trained one way successfully all his life and has now come up aganst a dog who doesn't conform to his training methods and has therefore given up! I may be totally wrong but the ecollar etc is, to my mind, not the way to go. With a working gundog, the last thing you want is to accidently correct their hunting/pointing and confuse them.
To my mind, the long lead would be the better way to go and retrain from scratch (including the relationship between you OH and is dog! ).
