Argh HELP, really bad cold, need to get rid quick??!

Oh no!

I have the mother of all colds/flu? It has come on so suddenly, my throat didn't feel right yesterday and i felt wierdly shattered after a day out so i went to bed early, then in the middle of the night i woke up with full blown migrane symptoms, stuffy head/nose, snotty, hot and cold, achey and a really sore throat!

It's come at the worst time, I have so much on this week, some meetings about work with new agencies and a new client - i start back at work after a year off soon!

I'm PETRIFIED the baby will get it, he got a cold once before about 2 months ago, he had it for 10 days and it disrupted his/our sleeping pattern for nearly a month!!

Hubby took the day off work to have him today and my mum is having him all day tomorrow!

I need remedies, quick, what do you find gets rid of colds quick! I've eaten veg soup, 2 oranges and am having max dose of cold/flu capsules, and have olbas oil by the bed!

echinacea (tincture is the most effective - and horrbile tasting / expensive)

vitamin C - 1000mg x 3 times per day

max 2 weeks - these will drive your immune system, but take for longer than 2 weeks and you'll wear it out

good quality multivitamin with probiotic

eat healthily - plenty fruit / veg and good protein

I've heard of that echinacea, do chemists sell it? I can get some first thing tomorrow.

Will i just get enough vitamin C from oranges?

ALL I am eating tomorrow is fruit and veg and drinking water/fruit/green tea!

Thank you xx

most chemist sell echinacea, i've only seen the tincture in boots; i use the high strength effervesecent along with berocca (or similar) when i have a cold

i would take this in addition to the oranges

green tea is a good idea as well

did the cold come on really fast or was it a gradual build up?

Brilliant, thank you!

It came on REALLY fast, like never before! I spent an hour with my nearly 100 year old nanna yesterday, eek!! I wouldn't have gone near her if i had an inclin I was ill, then we had a huge walk down Scarborough sea front with the baby, dog and my mum n dad and i felt great! It was just when I got home in the evening to ours that i felt strangely shattered and my throat was 'starting'.. then today I have just been bed ridden!

Good news is if it came on fast and horrible then often then go just as quickly
But as me grannie always said
'A treated cold lasts 7 days an untreated cold lasts a week'

The cold is a viral infection I'm afraid that you cannot change or speed up your immune systems ability to to get rid of it through taking vitamin c etc. All you can do is help relieve the symptoms with decongestants and painkillers.
