Spyware

I was just reading another thread and Graeme mentioned how he knew that a couple of people had spyware on their computers how can you tell if you have spyware on your computer?

Also I've just recentley had some problems with my computer and it still isn't fixed even after a two and half an hour phone call to Telewest, Microsoft and Dell - any-one want to know in case they know whats wrong

For spyware, I use Spysweeper and Spybot Search & Destroy. For adware, I use Adaware. If you download any of these programmes, make sure you update them regularly and scan once a week or so. If Graeme's not around and you need help, feel free to gimme a shout - I'm not in his league, but I'm not exactly PC illiterate either

Hi Graeme - last week when I went to switch my computer on and access the internet it was saying that page could not be displayed - so I phoned Telewest to see if there were any problems and they said no - took me through some procedures and said there is no reason that I shouldn't be able to access the internet then they said it was because I had service pack 2 installed and told me to phone microsoft

So I phoned microsoft and they took me through more procedures and said it wasn't service pack 2 because its been running since December without any problems and told me to phone Dell

So I phoned Dell and after a very frustrating 40 min phone call where I had to switch my machine on and off on and off I was told it was a software problem and I would have to pay for further advice ( at this point I completley lost my rag at the poor guy on the other end of the phone who was obviously new at his job and couldn't understand my accent!!!)

When I went back into the computer and went to access the internet a message came from Avast asking to allow access which I did it then allowed me into the computer then I had to allow access to view my email account

I just don't understand why this happened - I have asked my OH if he did anything and he says he didn't ( although he could have but dosen't want to admit to it )

And yes I run on XP - sorry for the long post

Emm can you try the following:

Goto the Start Menu -> Run... -> Type cmd then click OK

A black window should appear.

Now type ping 66.150.197.100

You should get something like the following:

Pinging 66.150.197.100 with 32 bytes of data:
Reply from 66.150.197.100: bytes=32 time=107ms TTL=51
Reply from 66.150.197.100: bytes=32 time=106ms TTL=51
Reply from 66.150.197.100: bytes=32 time=108ms TTL=51
Reply from 66.150.197.100: bytes=32 time=109ms TTL=51
Ping statistics for 66.150.197.100:
Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 4, Lost = 0 (0% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
Minimum = 106ms, Maximum = 109ms, Average = 107ms
Can you post the Minimum, Maximum and Average times and the Number of Packets Sent, Received and Lost.

Now type tracert 66.150.197.100

It'll take a minute or so. What I'm interested in is the number on the last line marked in bold below:

15 108 ms 107 ms 108 ms 66.150.197.100

Trace complete.
From these 2 tests we should be able to see if there is a problem with your internet connection or not.

Graeme
