Lambs hearts

Hi I'm new to the site. I was searching for anyone who feeds raw lambs hearts to their dog. My 12 week old pup will eat nothing else and is piling on muscle. Does anyone know of nutritional pros and cons?

Hi and welcome

I don't raw feed my dogs but there are plenty of people here that do. You may want to open another thread in the 'Diet and Nutrition' section

Hello Phil welcome.
A lot of people here feed lams hearts as part of a raw diet.
This thread may be of help to you, lambs hearts are mentioned a little way down the page.

Lambs heart is quite fatty so maybe use beef heart as well, and don't feed a lot of it. Heart is very good as it contains amino acids which are the building blocks of nature.
It is actually a muscle meat rather than offal.

i would only feed heart as part of a raw diet.... as dogs need lot of different proteins
and minerals, that they will not get from hearts alone

I feed raw and I include lamb hearts in the diet but I would never feed purely one source of protein to a dog (unless it had allergies or was intolerant to everything bar one) as a dog can become sensitised to proteins this way.

I would also not feed purely meat to a dog, especially a puppy as it will not contain sufficient calcium to lay down good bone etc.

If you are going to feed raw I think it might be a good idea to belong to some specialist yahoo or [a social network] groups and do some reading.

Also, piling on too much muscle at a very young age can be extremely unhealthy in the long run.

Hello Phil,
You're on the right track but most of the problems I see with people feeding raw is it's not balanced. Feeding just lamb hearts is very dangerous if that's what you're doing.

A diet I recommend to clients and my 60 lb. Husky is something like this, split into 2 feedings: 3/4 lb. raw chicken, turkey or beef; 1/4 lb. of raw organ meats (mixture of chicken liver, chicken hearts, beef liver, beef kidney), 1 raw meaty beef rib bone; 2 raw eggs, 2 krill oil capsules, 1 multivitamin. Cost only around $2/day and takes 5 minutes to make.
He's the healthiest dog around. Good luck, Roger Biduk
