itunes not working :(

I had an ipod until about 9 months ago, i had had it for about 4 years and then dropped it... so it died anyways, i eventually got round to getting a new one but itunes isnt working properly! i still used itunes to listen to music, and a few weeks back it asked my to download the new itunes (itunes 10 or something). after getting my new ipod, i wanted to put more cds on my comp but everytime i asked it to itunes would get a message saying itunes had stopped working and it shuts down. So, i added the cds via media player... but now they are in a different format! and when i ask itunes to convert it, it comes up again saying itunes has stopped working and shuts down! i have tried downloading itunes again, but it still wont work... anyone any idea what i can do to change the songs format?

Have you saved all your music to my music file on your computer?
If so then you could un install i tunes then try downloading it again. Without losing your music.
