Dog goes frantic when sees other dogs/cats

Hi all, Thanks everybody who replied on my previous question about Ben and for all your good advice now here's a another!Ben is a rescue Staffie/Cross about 2 years old, lovely temperament with people, he has settled nicely with us now. He is quite obedient has been trained, chipped and castrated. except for the following problems. When going out for walks (on any lead or harnass we have tried them all), he goes bananas when he sees another dog or cat and has he is very strong it takes all my strength to hold him back. As we can't trust whether he is going to be friendly or attack (he gives the impression to the other dog walker that he could attack and they are obviously petrifed) Help! He is a good dog in every other respect we have had him 5 weeks, but unfortunately he has been in the rescue centre for almost 12 months. The home had no history on him, as he had been transferred from another town. I suspect that the previous owner may have had the same problem and couldn't cope and that is why he ended up in a rescue centre. He also has a weird habit off whining at the back garden we can only think it's the bird noises, as when we let him in the garden he runs manic barking at nothing?? and it is not because he wants the toilet. I am very anxious to resolve this because I am worried that somebody may complain about him and we have a visit from the police! Or worse have to send him back

Hi Kath
do you have any friends, family, neighbours who have dogs who you could possibly accompany on a walk to guage his behaviour then?

Hello

Sounds just like Bruno when we first got him and to some extent very much how he still is ( and probably always will be)
Bruno was just about to turn 2 when we got him and he is dog aggressive. However not with all dogs - we walk him with my friends dog and he gets off lead with her when we can too - BUt it takes time - YOu need to find a failry calm dog and start walking them together and see how this goes for a while.

Bear in mind that if he has been in a rescue centre he will have been in a kennel with dogs on either side of him for nearly a year - listening to them bark and not being able to see them - so of course he will not know how to react to other dogs whilst out - sounds like a totallack of socialisation which is the issue with Bruno too.

YOu just need to build it up with him - so try and get friendly with some of the other dog owners and see if you can start walking together and eventually if your dog sees that the other dogs arent threatening you or him he probably will chill out and you will see his true temperament. I dont necessarily believe that Bruno would attack every dog but you cant take the chance with him - however it took 4 or 5 weeks to get him walking with Josie, so wasnt too bad and he is a lot calmer than he was 2 years ago in general.

He will still be getting used to you after 5 weeks also - so just give him a little time and see how it goes..

as far as the garden thing goes - Bruno does same thing - always whines to get out and its usually to chase squirrel, pigeon, any birds really either ouot of the garden or off the telegraph pole at the bottom of the garden - Its a territory thing - he doesnt like anything in his garden ( other than people). Even if a carrier bag blows in it gets a 4 stone staffie runniing at it !!!

They can totally hear things you cant - and in some ways its probably that he just loves to be oiut - Bruno does - he would stay out all day if he could.

Good advice Dani thanks a lot I think you are absolutely right about the dog not being aggressive but like you I am too cautious to trust Ben yet, I don't know any other dog owners in my area prepared to take the chance but I will certainly try to find one!! Cheers Kath & Ben's new family.

Hi Lel, thanks for your reply you answered my very first question, when we first got Ben and I always look out for your messages. I don't know anybody prepared to chance walking with me and Ben but I will certainly try and find a walking companion for Ben to see how he reacts. I feel sure that his problem is being shut up for nearly 12months at the RSPCA is the main cause. I will let you know the outcome. Regards Kath

Hello Kath

Try posting a message in your vets to see if you can find someone. Or talk to your vet about finding a dog to walk with.

Karen

Staffys do need affection and attention and Im sure being shut away for such a long time hasnt had a good affect on him - poor lad but love and perseverance will only do him good
Do keep us up to date though ....

What area are you in- you could always ask on here if theres anyone local to you?
After he becomes used to walking with others he may calm down a little
