Cancer. Would you use a stud dog that had a cancer?

If a dog was diagnosed with Cancer, Would anyone think it acceptable to use him before he dies?

i think NOT!

i wouldnt think that would be the case unless it was testicular, prostate, penile cancer etc. or unless the dog had been exposed to radio or chemo therapy as this could cause mutation of the gametes. or unless the cancer had metastasized already to the reproductive organs in which case the dog would be so ill he would probably be unable to perform anyway.

It wasnt any of those cancers, & he was still "quite" healthy at the time.

My Saffs pup died of cancer aged 8 and the only way they could check if it was inherited was to do a PM. Which they did.

My Glen dog was PTS with Lymphoma just months after he sired a litter, however he had no symptoms until the last 5 weeks of his life, well after he mated the puppies mother.

I would not use a dog with cancer, I do know a now deceased Labrador breeder, who mated his dying Sandylands Champion dog to both of his bitches before he had him PTS & waited until both bitches were confirmed in whelp too

None of my Glen's puppies developed Lymphoma BTW.

whoa, so you know of this actually happening? i thought it was rhetorical. this is why i think it is important to freeze some semen if you wish to continue a particular line.

within the next few months i will be having my boys semen frozen incase anything should happen to him. hate to look on the "black side" but i believe in being prepared and he is only 20 months!
