Are heat lamps a good option for keeping my Collie pup warm?

I'm about to get an 11 week old Rough Collie puppy, and am worried about it getting too cold while spending the day in its garage pen while we're not home.

I live in Seattle Washington so we get some colder weather, and its common for the garage to get near 40 degrees F or below in the winter.

I was originally thinking I would put an electric heater in the garage to take the chill off, but its such a large garage that heating it with a electric heater would be difficult and expensive. I have a few nice newer space heaters i can put outside the pups pen.

My uncle suggested putting a heat lamp near the pen so the dog can go under the lamp when its cold and go elsewhere in the pen if it gets too warm. He's talking about a lamp with an infrared bulb similar to what might be in your bathroom ceiling.

Anybody else had great success or failure using these methods to keep dogs warm? THANKS!

No this would not be a good option. Why is the pup not in the house?
Dogs are social animals, and this is a very young creature who needs socialisation, companionship and training. He`s not going to get any of that in a garage.

They have said only when they are not home.

I wouldn't think of shutting my pup in a cold garage when I went out.

What about a crate in the house?

No I would never keep a puppy(or adult dog)in a garage, most garages are only single skin walls & get very cold. Far better to put the puppy pen in the house then no extra heating would be required.

Don't forget most people keep all sorts of noxious substances in garages & even in closed containers there can still be carcinogens etc in the atmosphere

The main problem with garages is is they a draughty and it is the draughts more than cold that is the problem.

The wording "spending the day in its garage pen" makes me think the pup is going to be left a while.

I certainly wouldn't leave any dog in a garage that can get so cold it needs a heat lamp! Not for any amount of time I'm afraid.

Well no matter wether it is in the garage or house in terms of socialising and training it won't be getting it no matter where it is if it is on its lonesome.

What about a utility room if you have one of those? I'm sure that would be a lot warmer by the sounds of it than the garage. Don't forget that little pup has been having both the warmth and comfort of it's mum and siblings ever since it was born when it snuggles up to sleep, this is going to be a tremendous shock to it's system to suddenly put it out in the cold and leave it all on its lonesome

Can't you put a crate somewhere indoors in the warm??? Pleeeeeeeease
