Re: Retired Greyhound

Hi

I can't recommend greyhounds enough. They make wonderful pets, i have 2. I am involved with greyhound rescue north yorkshire, if you would like any general advice or info or potential suitable dogs then let me know. There are so many greyhound out there needing homes so you shouldn't have too much trouble in finding one that would be compatible with your family. You have made an excellent choice!

Re: Retired Greyhound

Hi Lara

I have just rescued a retired racer (non chaser, and never actually raced) He is twenty months and the most beautiful boy. He lives happily with my two terriers and cat. He just loves the cat, but if he ran Milo would run also but just wanting to play! Having said that the two terriers would also! In this house the cat definately rules the roost and is not afraid of the dogs at all. Therefore, the dogs all have a healthy respect for him (very wise as he has been known to "bat" all of them) ! Greyhounds do make the most loyal fantastic pets. Most need time to settle but do so very quickly. The majority have never been in a house so are initially wary having never seen a hoover, television, hairdryer etc. As I type Milo is asleep upsidedown on the sofa watching the telly! One piece of advice I can give is to remeber they are Sighthounds and can see something moving at up to half a mile away. They can run at speeds of up to 45mph and reach top speed in just three strides! So unless you can outrun them recall training is a must!

Good Luck!

Re: Retired Greyhound

The only problem I seem to have is that there are none close to where I live - they're all 50+ miles away!

Its a shame you can't come to Essex, there are plenty round here My aunt has had them and they are wonderful and if I didn't have indoor bunnies I would have one, infact probably will when my babies pass on..... My aunts lot are couch potatoes... but do spring to life when squirrels appear

Re: Retired Greyhound

Yes, Essex is a little too far! I've phoned another place this evening but I'm not getting contact with any of them and this weekend is the last weekend we'll have my partner's daughter before our week off (the last week off we get this year) so we get a greyhound for that weekend (4th October) or won't be having a dog at all this year (or least until Christmas) because I want a week a off so the dog can used to us, smells etc.

And, of course, all rescues won't home a dog unless it meets all the family members so its this weekend or we can pretty much forget it for the next 3 or 4 months which would be so upsetting (especially given what happened with Thunder's owner).
