Yes they do look unusually large for an Arctic wolf! There is a wide variation in the form of wolf sub species around the globe and ear size is determined by latitude and climate. Large ears for better heat dissipation in hot climates and small, thick, well furred ears in the cold, but not so small as to compromise hearing. Shape is vital too and wolves tend to have wider base with more rounded tips than most dog breeds... for better circulation and hearing.
