Puppies separated from mother

We have been to look at a litter of toy Cockapoos today and we are satisfied entirely with everything you should look for when buying a Cockapoo. We asked loads of questions and all were answered satisfactorily.

The only problem we have is that the Cocker Spaniel mother was injured last Friday night whilst out walking by catching one of its teets on some barbed wire. Consequently the mother lost a large amount of blood at the time and was taken to an emergency vet. The vet has advised that the pups are kept separate from the mother for 10 days as they will cling onto her and could cause further damage to her. The pups are all socialising together but we are concerned about the effects of being separated from the mother at such an age (incident occurred when pups were six weeks old).

The pubs are being fed through a pump instead and are on a beta diet.

We are first time puppy buyers so would like some advice on whether we should regrettably avoid these puppies on this occasion.

Thanks

6 weeks is a little young to be taken off the mother - 8 weeks is better - but in these circumstances clearly it cannot be helped. My opinion is that it will be absolutely fine as the puppies have already had the benefit of mum's milk for 6 weeks, but I am not an expert in such matters.

One of the puppies I had in the past was only 6 weeks when we got him and he was absolutely fine with no health issues. I think my advice would be to take him if you have really bonded with him etc. etc., but draw up a document for both yourselves and the breeders to sign that having taken the pup to the vet in x number of weeks for a full medical etc. etc. and there are any problems, you reserve the right to return the pup to the breeders with a full refund plus your vet bill. Make sure it is signed and witnessed by an independent person.

I love Cockapoos - I hope this works out for you x gnasher

If these puppies are being reared on a Beta product, why would they need to have milk via a pump? They should have been lapping for quite a while now. We're you allowed to see the mother - even though she has, (quite correctly), been separated from her puppies? Did she have what appeared to be a serious tear to her undercarriage?
I think the fact that as first time buyers, you have been canny enough to post on here, shows that you have a niggle about these people. You could always pay a second visit and push them to show the mother - after all it would be good to be able to check on her size and temperament. I would say follow your gut instinct, it is usually right.

As Carole says it doesn't sound right. If they are 6 weeks and are weaned they have no need to be fed via a pump at all. They can lap. Their mother is usually fed up of them by then, as they have sharp teeth and claws and keeps her distance.
Another thing....the mother shouldn't be going walks if she's then coming back to young puppies as she could pick anything up thats going and pass it on to them. I know this by my own experience by the way, and never ever again will I take any of my older dogs out when I have a litter, one of my babies nearly died and the others were very poorly.
Sounds like a made up story to me. Also, have the parents any health tests at all, they are a cross between a cocker and a poodle I gather, both of whom can have serious eye problems, including cherry eye, which can result in blindness, also cockers are prone to hip and elbow displaysia. I would be asking a lot of questions and wanting to see documentation before I parted with any money.

Beta Puppy is a dried food that you make into a mush and feed puppies as you have no clue that they have teeth and can eat proper food

Hi you do not say did you see the mother and her wound/stitched tummy
Sorry but whatever story I was told I would want to see a bitch with the puppies if at all possible at some stage.
I will be charitable and assume the barbed wire was in the garden. No one would take a nursing bitch far these days with Parvo Virus around. Very 'unfortunate' the injury occurred just when the puppies are ready to be viewed with the dam.
The puppies should be about weaned anyway and only feeding occasionally (which keeps up the acquired passive immunity, stop feeding and the period covered is shortened something to keep in mind)

Beta is the most basic of food for survival, it would not be my choice.

So all in all I would think twice about getting one of these puppies cute as they may be .

My Tibetan Spaniel was only 6 weeks old when I brought her home. I saw her mother and father as well as all her siblings.

She'd already been weaned onto puppy kibble

I have to agree with the others, firstly did you see the mother of the pups, secondly at 6 weeks old they should be eating solid food and no need to be fed by a pump, they should be lapping water, all sounds odd to me .

By the time puppies are 6 weeks old the dam will have had enough of them anyway, and wil not be spending much time with them at all, but in your situation I would hope you did see the mum, and the breeder has health tested both parents for inherent problems. Both breeds can carry.
