Sherwood Forest: Warning over woodland dog illness

A dog owner whose pet became ill after walking in Sherwood Forest is warning people to watch for signs of a "mystery illness" that could kill their pets.

Seasonal Canine Illness (SCI) is associated with animals which have been walked in wooded areas or parkland in autumn months.

Cases are characterised by lethargy, vomiting and rapid unconsciousness.

The cause of the illness is still unconfirmed and needs further research, a veterinary charity has said.

Could be poisonous fungus? As an avid forager of wild mushrooms I have foraged in Sherwood Forest and it is paradise for the mycologist! There are several species of mushroom that would cause these symptoms in dogs - Wood Blewits come to mind, which are just coming into season now. Whereas these are delicious cooked, they can be poisonous to some when raw, including dogs I would think.

Whilst snuffling in the undergrowth, it is perfectly possible for dogs to accidentally "eat" fungi - the last 3 years, including this one, have been mast years for fungi - a mast year is one where there is an abundance of berries, fruits etc. - which would account for why it has been quite a recent thing perhaps?
