Yearly injections

Is it worth carrying on having my 4 year old dogs injected every year, I kept it up because they sometimes were kennelled .
Someone told me that vets in America say it's pointless.:

Well generally when you kennel you have no choice. If you no longer kennel and are certain you never will then do what you think's best. I used to have mine done annually for exactly the same reasons but stopped when I stopped kennelling.

Yes I agree. Just been reading some old threads on Dogsey and they are now saying every 3 to 4 years, and not bother for older dogs.

Its a big argument because people say the vaccines are effectve for longer,
Im not sure how they vaccinate in the US but in Europe (UK) vets use a 3 year rotating system of vaccination.
Some things like Lepto are done yearly because the lepto protection does wear off and isnt effective against all types of the disease.
Other people dont vaccinate at all and rely on titre testing to ensure the dog has enough natural antibodies aganst the diseases.

What I do know is this Ive seen a dog die from distemper and its something I will never forget and never want to see again.
My dogs are all vaccinated according to Vet guidelines and none of my dogs have ever had any of these sicknesses my friend forgot her lepto vaccination and three months later her dog was dead of lepto. We used to walk along the same tow path ...

Vaccinate or not the choice is yours...the life you gamble with is theirs.

One of my dogs was vaccinated regularly and died of lepto. It is up to the individual to decide and do some research. I will say this why aren't children vaccinated again after initial vaccines??

I get mine done annually but if my vet said that it doesn't need to be done every year then I wouldn't.

As both my dogs have Pet Passports which need to be kept up to date in case of an emergency where as has happened they need to be taken to the UK (I live in Hungary) my two are vaccinated annually.

By law they have to be vaccinated every year against Rabies, which I normally have done every November. Failure do do so results in a heavy fine and the dog being put in quarantine for minimum of 3 weeks at the owners expense!

Although you vaccinate every year most vets operate the 3 year protocol, so usually the lepto is done every year and the others are done 3 yearly, seems to make no difference to the price though.

So sorry for your loss brenda..

Its true there is more than one strain of lepto, there is now a new lepto vaccination done in two stages which should help protect against lepto much better than the old vaccine did..
