Three-week old baby dies after dog attack in Sunderland

Police received reports a baby boy had been bitten by a dog inside an address in Falkland Road at about 04:15 BST.

He was taken to hospital where he later died. Police said the small terrier dog had been removed from the address and is likely to be destroyed.

Northumbria Police said a 30-year-old man had been arrested in connection with the incident. Inquiries are ongoing to establish the circumstances.

Superintendent Gillian Mitchell said: "This is obviously a very tragic incident and our thoughts are with the family of the baby at such a difficult time."

Can't imagine people's stupidity. I remember the first year we had Sophie. My daughter was around ten so she wasn't small but she was waving her arms and playing in the snow. Something about it excited Sophie and she rushed at her. Fortunately she didn't bite. I wouldn't leave a baby alone with any dog.

Makes a change to hear "small terrier" and not staffy.
The news first said the dog lived in the shed normally then said the dog was used to living with small children ??????

It sounds like a tragic accident which happened while the father was baby sitting

Such a very sad story. How could the dog possibly be used to children if it normally lived in 'a brick outhouse'? A big error by Dad, and I doubt the State could possibly punish him any more than he is punishing himself.
