Why Do Dogs Watch - and React - to TV?

Domestic dogs can perceive images on television similarly to the way we do, and they are intelligent enough to recognize onscreen images of animals as they would in real life—even animals they've never seen before—and to recognize TV dog sounds, like barking.

A 2013 study published in the journal Animal Cognition showed that dogs could identify images of other dogs among pictures of humans and other animals, using their visual sense alone. (Also see "OCD Dogs, People Have Similar Brains; Is Your Dog OCD?")

However, there are some differences between ourselves and man's best friend—for one, dogs' eyes register images more quickly than do ours. So older television sets, which show fewer frames per second than modern televisions, would appear to a dog to be flickering like a "1920s movie," said Nicholas Dodman, a veterinary behaviorist at Tufts University, in Massachusetts.

Chloe loves watching TV and during the recent series on Wolves on BBC 2 refused to be moved away from the screen

One of our dogs loved watching Come Outside with Pippin the dog in it. Even if he was upstairs and the music came on he would race downstairs to watch it. We have a pic somewhere of him watching it. Don't know where it is though. Tyto the doglet that I have now hates the music to Coronation Street and howls to it.

Pepsi can appear fast asleep until a dog appears on TV. It doesn't have to make a sound but she will start a low growling noise in her throat. Then grumble and snuggle down back to sleep

Neither of mine pay a lick of attention to it. We never watch tv but it's often on the music channel or weather channel so suppose they are used to it.

When Georgina was partially sighted and heard a strange noise on the TV she'd immediately panic and rush round house whining. I'd have to calm her down, then stand her in front of the screen and whisper "television" next to her ear. Since she's had her sight back she takes no notice. Gwylim had never seen television until he was 9 months old and for the first week he was fascinated by it and when a dog barked he'd go up to the screen and start to howl! He's so used to the TV being on he just ignores it which fine by me because I can now watch it in peace!

Neither of my two do more than occasionally glance at the TV. Even Crufts Agility only gets a momentary look, but they do recognise the sound of young puppies, and the barking of dogs in rescue kennels, and appear to show concern.
They did both come from rescue kennels.

Are my babies dumb as rocks? Well...But actually they don't pay too much attention to computer or TV at all unless there's definite barking. One time I was watching a training video with an aggressive dog on the computer and Soph rushed at the screen...a few teeny brain cells whirling around in there.
