Advice on Behaviour Courses Please

Hi all,

I have joined tonight to ask for some genuine advice.

My partner would like to become a Canine Behavourist in the future. He completed a higher diploma in Canine Behaviour Management through Compass last year and has now enrolled onto 2 courses through Cambridge Institute.

He would like opinions on the best courses out there as he is not sure the Cambridge Institute is for him.

He doesn't just want to start trading and would like to take the best path possible. He currently volunteers once a week at a rescue and volunteers for a local trading behaviourist.

I look forward to hearing your valued opinions and thank you in advance.

I think he is very wise to research the best course for him to determine whether or not that study will equip him with the necessary qualifications to be accepted as a member of the APBC etc.

I think, if he has not already done so, he should read the proposed criteria for dog trainers, instructors and behaviourists here:

http://abtcouncil.org.uk/practitioner-standards.html

And then further advice is available from the ASAB

http://asab.nottingham.ac.uk/accred/application.php

Further information here from the APBC

http://apbc.org.uk/info/training_courses

COAPE

http://www.coape.org/index.html

and UKRCB

http://www.ukrcb.org/members/membership-criteria/

Hopefully that should provide food for thought?

If he is committed to more long term study, a BSc in Canine Training and Behaviour could be the way forward. It's a distance learning course in the main, but some attendance (weekends, block weeks) required.

For full-time study, there's also the Animal Training and Behaviour BSc.

Both involve practical as well as theory

Not cheap, but good courses.

Run at Bishop Burton College, I'm sure you'll find info on their website
