I hope this is not the case, as I have years and years worth of photos on PB and all have great sentimental value to me. Perhaps I need to start saving to discs

I always save to disc either on a DVD or extrnl hard drive. Relying on the intrnl hrd drive or on a web storage site is not a good idea. We learnt that lesson he hard way when we "lost" over 5000 clients on a computer when we were in business.
No not my fault this time it was a failure on a Maxtor hard drive and maxtor had to replaced it.

I didn't know that some hard drive producers give a 3 year warranty (or used to ) irrespective of the 1 year computer one

I don't trust external hard drives. I lost 2500 photos including many of my son as a baby when there was some problem with my external drive

...i have "misplaced" my external hard drive.... i know it is safe just very very safe Lol
