Have to say that if I was advised that my breed of dog could end up with urinary incontinence if spayed I think I'd opt not to have her done. 10 - 12 yrs or more owning an incontinent large dog isn't something I'd like to take the risk of if I could avoid it.
As I said previous, I had dogs all my life and mainly bitches but this is the first for me too

The propalin has worked far better than I expected and not a drip has been seen since the very first day she started taking it. She only takes it once a day and at a reduced rate for her weight, I keep meaning to try and reduce it further but don't want to risk going backwards. At least by taking a reduced dose we have the option of increasing it if it ever gets worse. None of my other bitches have been spayed yet, tbf my other Dobermann bitch has issues which could be aggravated by spaying and I keep saying the pugs are too young. I think they'll be too young for a while yet.
you never know will definitely try and get some propalin and will also mention it to the vet tomorrow..just hope I can find it somewhere for a reasonable price

But then I'd always understood that 10 or 11 was the expected lifespan for a GSD even tho some do live longer.

It was when I was trying to decide whether to have my Cavvy spayed I found out about this and them being 'healthier for it' if you are not going to breed. I had her done (aged 4) as soon as I was told. I was considering it anyway as, for a little dog, her seasons were a total 6 act drama! Much worse than the previous big dog - started when she was 6 months, came every 6 months and seemed to last forever.

People really should be told ALL the pros and cons of various procedures IMHO. To make informed decisions. Still think I couldn't 'opt' to have anything done that would result in an incontinent dog unless it was a lifesaving procedure.

Going for a swim now.
lol, I had my swim and a flutter on ascot!!!! I knew the risk ( as I was told by my vet and also by my friend who has got a dobi with the same.). which was minimal but hey.. sometimes life sucks .. had one girl die from pyometra that's why I had this one spayed ... it doesn't happen very often but the risk is there... in all fairness, there are risks with everything we do or not do... you just have to deal with the consequences sometimes not bad and other times not too bad.. life goes on and we deal with it as good as we can .. I LOVE my dogs, they are my babes and I will do everything I can to keep or make them as healthy as possible..

There are lots of theories on why this happens but no seen anything to back them up.
thanks Margaret... mine is about 60 kg!!!!! and my vet says that it is a hormone problem but don't know why it happens to only a few ...

She weighs a little over 60kg and gets 1.2ml twice a day. A 100ml bottle lasts me about 6 weeks therefore. I pay for a repeat prescription (6 months worth) from my vet (about £7.50) and buy the medication online (about £24 for 100ml) which is literally half the price of buying it off the vet direct.

On the bottle it says recommended dose 0.1ml per 5kg three times a day, which is what she probably started on, but as I say we dropped to twice and it works. I believe it works by controlling the sphincter muscles so I'll be interested to know what the hormone tablets do.

Good luck!

PS Spanish mastiff; wow, gorgeous!

oh that sounds about the same as over here... thank you Barnet,, will definitely buy some then after having spoken to my vet tomorrow,.. ( he actually listens to me too, lol ).. then maybe it is expensive to start off with but not in the long run... also maybe I can start on a low dose as so far, over the last 3 weeks, it has only happened mayby 6 or 7 times.. not every day anyway..

Just been looking up Spanish Mastiffs. Wow! Spanish Mastiff could wear my little bella on a chain round her neck like a pendant!

*thinking about the size of dog tho - I guess when they make a 'puddle' it's quite some puddle!
