I was going to ax you an answer then decided I would be better of not axing.

Yes in other words !

I take T's point that it reveals a lot about the person posting though !

Me.

It drives me bananas, especially apostrophes in the wrong place or missing......

Aaaarrrgggghhhhh!

I feel the need every time to correct them, but manage not to.......just......

Yes, I am definitely a spelling snob but didn't actually realise how many words i've been spelling wrong for years until I installed Google Chrome!

Another thing that bugs me is when people say "can I lend a fiver?" or "I'll borrow you some money".
I lend, you borrow, get it right!

Imply v infer

I infer something from what somebody else has said or written.

I imply something if I have said or written it.

Many people think that the word "definitely" contains an "a";

And it is "different from" not "different to" AAAAAAAAAGH

Ah - "The Grocers' Apostrophe" and suchlike! I am a word freak in that I love words, I collect words, and when I come across one I have never seen/heard before and it looks interesting, I will track down the meaning and origin of it.

I have row upon row of dictionaries, encyclopaedia, word books [as in crossword cheaters, oops, I mean helpers] ] and am currently dipping into the following - not for the first time, either\;

"Eats, Shoots & Leaves" by Lynne Truss [frequently called Eats Shoots and Leaves".

"Mother Tongue" by Bill Bryson.

"Bryson's Dictionary of Troublesome Words - A Writer's Guide To Getting It Right" by Bill Bryson.

I seem to collect such books, some of which are fairly serious/intellectual/instructional - and some of which are just fun!

The latter include - and they are by far not the only three:

"Bred Any Good Rooks Lately?" gathered by James Charlton.

"Rules of Thumb" by Tom Parker.

"The Cat's Pajamas -A Fabulous Fictionary of Familiar Frases" by Tad Teluja.

I have no idea where the last three came from or how I came to get them, suffice it to say they have been with me for a long time.

And yet - and yet - I still have to think whether it is "compared to" or "compared with".

I'm a bit like it too, especially with incorrectly spelt words - it drives me potty !! I don't have a choice at deciphering text talk as I have a teenager in the house and she's terrible with it!!!

As a teenager, my friend and I had a 3 point check with any prospective suitors on spelling was on my list If they couldn't spell then bye bye

I know it bugs people, and I do try my best
I am dyslexic and I just cant see when I have got it wrong sometimes, and I cant use spellcheck too well because I cant see the right word either
I am sorry, I know it annoys people but I cannot help it

as for me, I dont read full words anyways but skim them so if I understand the meaning of what people are writing then I dont mind at all
