Update on the 3 Baby Hogs (Mary, Mungo and Midge)

Well, I had to ring Sue from the BHPS last weekend to check whether a hedgehog could gain too much too quickly!!!!

They came to us on Bank Hol Monday 28th August weighing in at about 180g each. 2 weeks later (last Sunday) the smallest weighed 440g, the next was 490g and the largest was a whopping 520g

Sue said that's great, they realise that they have to 'pile it on' and have been eating for Britain (and being hand fed chicken breast helps I suppose )

They will be given 'till next weekend, when hopefully they will all be 550 - 600g and the doors will be opened. Don't mean to be pushy, but I need to make room for any Autumn Babies

They are monsters compared to when they arrived
They have sorted out their body clocks too, so only come out at night - and Charlie has been putting a few snails in there so they get used to live food.

We have had to import some from next door though 'cos ours have all been eaten by the adult hog!!

Brilliant, I bet Charlie loves them doesn't she? I know George would (although he loves snails so may not be too happy about that part, not that we have any...thanks to a gigantic frog...)
Well done, you've done a fantastic job.

Ailsa, yes, Charlie loves them. You've just reminded me - I was having a dip in our local pool while Charlie was having her swimming lesson on Tuesday evening, and the instructor shouts (really loud!)

"CHARLOTTES MUM, Don't worry, I know all about the 3 babies you've taken in and how their mother was squashed flat by a car!!!!! " I didn't think I could manage a FULL LENGTH underwater - but I did

Jen, they are the sweetest little things, and Phil bought a rodent run/hutch so they would 'harden up' so when they've gone - I'll have room for 2 litters this year

When we overwintered Henry, I had to speak with a proper Hedgehog carer from the BHPS and since then, if she has any that are nearer me than her - she sends them my way! We had a 20 mile round trip to fetch these hoglets, but they were worth every inch :smt001

(goes off in search of thread :smt002 )
