ok jsut read thsi on another forum that puppiues shoudlnt be walked esp larger breeds as it damages the hips, stresses them and doesnt allow the sockets to set properly.

sounds erm ridiculous to me

I think it applies to young pups under the age of 12 months, going up and downstairs can damage joints etc,i think the rule is 5 mins exercise for every month. We give Tyler 30 mins on lead exercise or 10 mins off lead and 20 onlead, which is about right for his age.

That's kind of true isn't it? That they have to start of with small walks then build it up. About 5 minutes for each month of their age or something like that :smt017
And that's why young dogs can't do agility beacause their joints are still growing.
I think it is especially large dogs that can be effected. Because they grow quickly Not sure about that though!

Yup - this is true.

Damages joints apparently..

Always wondered why the same rule doesn't apply to humans though....

we dont walk welshies properly until there 12 months old and that includes stairs as we have hip dysplasia in the breed and we try to protect there hips.
I cheat a little though as you have to socialise them and all my dogs sleep in the bedroom with us (I know its wrong but....). I have a child gate at the bottom of the stairs to stop youngesters going up.

Hi Morganstar,

Who said dogs sleeping in your bedroom is wrong ?

A lot of people say it's wrong, but it's up to the individual.

My Mick has always slept in the bedroom from day one when he was a pup.

In his own bed though, he knows he's not allowed on mine and never has got on there.

I know there's quite a few on here who have their dogs in with them.

Anyway back to the thread, as Mick is a Labrador, I didn't walk him until he had been given all his injections, even then it was only up the road a few doors and back again.

My vet told me that he always makes sure he tells new pup owners not to go too far with their pups, as their little bones are not set properly.

It's the same as babies, you don't make them walk, do you, they eventually pull themselves up and do it of their own accord at a certain age.

It's critical in Dalmatians, there is one I know which was exercised 6 hours a day as a puppy and he now has a front like a Bulldog with elbows out and feet pointing at each other. He is likely to suffer arthritis later.
There is a lot of soft tissue and joints that can be damaged. It's not just to do with size/weight, but how quickly the breed matures. Dalmatians are not grown up physically until they are 2.

It's also critical in Great Danes - I guess all giant breeds too. You can't put too much strain on young joints - you have to wait for them to mature first.
