Calming hyper/over-excitable/energetic dogs

Not sure whether this should go under diet or behaviour but does anyone have any gems on this?

The TTouch books are quite interesting to read. I have Getting In TTouch With Your Dog . I got it for fireworks and thunder as they frighten Finn He loves the soothing massages.

As the owner of a very excitable puppy we have tried loads of things and the only thing that truly works is tickling her!!!

If we should Mr Tickle fingers she stops dead in her tracks and waits for us to tickle/massage her back and tummy! It stops her biting, jumping and generally running about like a mad thing. The few moments it takes makes her forget what she was doing and she soon settles down. It's the one way we can get her to drop her ball too!

Don't ask me why it works - but I'm not going to complain

I have tried massaging Loki's back legs and he loves this but it only calms him while I'm doing it. I just wondered if there are dietary or behavioural methods of soothing a dog. I find myself gazing enviously at owners wondering past with calm dogs next to them while my lad is behaving like a nutcase . Loki has always been a bit of a wild one though.

There is an article by Joann M. Locher floating around the net. I think it is called "How to have a calmer dog" and it addresses diet as well as exercise etc. Might be worth reading
